that pic is also not very accurate, once on the move the space between the cars needs to be bigger, the space between the bikes also gets bigger but by a much smaller margin

correcto mundo

we often do a quick calculation on our morning commutes into town to see how much clear road we leave for the people in their cars.

our average number on a morning commute = 15 riders

std parking bay depth = 5m

So then in absolute bumper to bumper traffic standing at a traffic light our group has cleared 75m of road.

Now get those cars moving and the total clear road has just become 150m.

At standing still on the lane if we are waiting we would take up 2 x 5m tandem parking.

Moving we will take up 17-20m total.

It boggles the mind.

Lets be honest.

We all use lift clubs and there is more than 1 person a car, so that reduces the car number by at least 50%. So that is 60 people in 30 cars as a minimum.

Cars? Who owns cars any more? Not me. Cars are so passe and 2000s. Real men don't own cars*

*yes this is a Friday post. No. I don't own a car**

**technically that isn't true. I own a car. It just isn't in the country I live in***

*** I don't have anything else to add.

Oh, that's nothing (imagine my Welsh accent) I haven't owned a car for more than 20 years, I've owned only Landrover Defenders in stead! They are not cars, but agricultural implements and they break down so often, I have to keep a whole fleet of bicycles as a back up plan. So, very low carbon footprint as well.

I'm all for any reason to buy new bicycles!

Just to explain my approach to transport a little better (according to Mrs DJR)

And then I haven't added the Classic collectors gems.........many of them........just because of nostalgia........for Eroica.........you can come along, it's in Italy.........because they are cool .........it's an investment.........I couldn't say no to a great deal..........Eddy Merckx once touched it........or Lance Armstrong road one just like that......you can sell it to buy a car once I'm dead...... etc. etc.

At least she has airbags

You learn quickly. Unless ASICS now make shoes with KEO clips, then it’s only the sock length that’s a n issue I think.

Edit: she also is not wearing a helmet...

maybe, but the image is powerful enough already. it's a classic that has been reproduced countless times. i bet many of the cars are actually the cyclists bring both their vehicles for the picture!

would be interesting to see a mycity vs bikelane vs CARS on the R27/milnerton route. could include travel times too
