Started my Espresso machine for the first time in two years.

Tried a decaf that I bought from SPAR. No coffee flavor at all. Was worried a bit. When I switched the machine on there was 0 steam pressure and the steam wand did not do anything. The pump also sounded a bit off.

Had to run the brewer for a while and what looked like calcium came out.

The pump started running normally and the steam wand started working.

Was glad it started working. Nespresso can’t get close to a very good cup of Coffee.

Your machine very likely needs to be de-calcified. You can either get the special tables and run the solution the machine, otherwise make a solution with citric acid. I normally use about 2 tablespoons in 1L of water and cycle it through the machine, let it  sit for a while, cycle again an them rinse properly by flushing through lots of fresh water.

It arrived this morning @ 9:00

Excited to try the different beans, but don't know what to start with first (Holy Roller or the Guatemala)

Coffee pot handle V2.0

So the previous handle failed......but it was a given that it would not last if "someone" (read wife) would use the handle to unscrew the pot from the base!

https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/115676-coffee-machine/?p=3633649

Been using a vice grip to "handle" the pot in the interim ... which worked, but was far from an ideal solution.

Ended up taking a grinder to a old 4mm saw blade, cut and roughly shaped to size. Used this in conjunction with a branch from a tree that I cut down in the garden and shaped to with my pocket knife and gave a light sand to. This timber when still fresh looked rather good, but as it dried it looked really terrible ..... so once pinned to the handle with brass rod I burnt the timber, gave it a light sand, and then another round over the candle ... I used a candle as it is raining like nobody's business, I do not have a blow torch, and have become impatient with this project. Timber was just sealed with teak oil.

I also drilled a secondary hole to the handle/pot to secure the new handle without using an epoxy to set it.

All in it is a rough and ready project, but is at least functional.

One bag of Guatemala finished - was telling The Nerd that I need to make a second cup (double espresso) just to get more of the good stuff.

That said, it’s lasted 5 days, compared to my normal 7 day consumption of 250g. Next up is a bag of Holy Roller.

If you aren’t buying from The Nerd, you are missing out on some good coffee. It’s going to be hard to go back to my loyal supplier when his restaurant opens one day.
