Coffee machine

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, i need a little help, i am considering one of the two machines below. I can get a lot more info on the expobar, does anyone have any experience with the la nouva era? This is for home use with 3-6 cups a day.

PS: thinking of pairing it with the Baratza/mahlkonig vario or Wega 5.8

I have the Wega 5.8 - I'm extremely happy with it. It's pretty fast and easy to adjust. Personally I don't use the "touch" functionality. I had an entry level Baratza before the Wega and there's no comparison. I've even seen them used in coffee shops as a lower volume second grinder for decaf.

As far as I understand it is the same machine as the Compak K3 - with slightly different finish and branding.

The grinder with the hopper is pretty tall, but I've ended up just using the neck of a 5 litre bottle instead - just put as much coffee as I'll use that morning and when it gets low stick something like a shot class in to stop it popcorning.

Photos aren't great but they give you the idea:

edit - I confused it with the bigger one - but its still a good small grinder.

Original post...It's a nice grinder - big and competent... doesn't fit well under some kitchen cupboards... check dimensions before buying.

I am not sure if you can get a small hopper for it - koldserve is probably the best source of that info locally.

My opinion is that expobar has better support in SA... and that's an important criteria.

That was one of my reasons why i kind of settled on the expobar. There is a lot more info on the net as well about the machines, that can make it easier to find a problem if something goes wrong. I've also bought a Mahlkonig Vario grinder at a decent price from a friend that i will upgrade at a later stage if i need to

How big of a difference does the PID make in this type of machine? is it worth spending the extra amount of money?

That's avery decent machine - was very happy with mine. My buddy who bought mine had a mod done on his which removed the need to open and close the steam when switching on the machine. It's now possible to run it on a timer.

On an e61 machine almost no difference - rather buy a grouphead temperature gauge - if you can navigate eric's rather basic page he is easy to deal with and reliable.

This is the doc you want

http://www.home-barista.com/tips/whats-best-way-to-use-erics-e61-thermometer-adaptor-t4545.html is a discussion on useage.

Edit - the pieces are all available locally if you want to build up your own kit... finding a decent thermometer is problematic https://www.swagelok.com/SwagelokAfrica/southern-africa.html

So online beans order was delivered. Placed an order with Terbodore. Service was great. Ordered on Monday and delivery arrived on Thursday along with a hand written postcard letting me know that life is better with Coffee (or something along those lines). So far I have finished a bag of Great Dane and am busy with a bag of This Is Africa. Still in the cupboard are a bag of Mocha Java and a bag of Uganda Organic.

So far so good.

I reckon this is the way to go.

Hi Guys

I would like to tap into your collective fountain of coffee knowledge. I'm currently looking at getting a machine and grinder for around 10k. A mate of mine has a Breville combined espresso machine and grinder. It pulls a decent shot and is in my price bracket. What is your guys opinion of it and would you recommend something else instead maybe like a combo?

Thanks

Luke
