I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who gets nailed by the wheel/toe overlap on the road bike. Another reason to either get white or black shoes; it's easier to patch the rub marks on the toe box.

I put white electrical tape over the front of my shoes.

 

I have often wondered if it's a bike fit issue - like I should be on a bigger frame ?

Some bikes have a very upright head angle, and short chain stays, putting the front (and the back) wheel more under you, rather than way out in front, so it can also just be the geometry. Many old high end racer steel bikes are like that. The tight head angle (and short wheel base) makes the bike much quicker and responsive to small steering input and weight shifts, but in the extreme, can also make it twitchy and unstable. Some people like a lively race horse feel, others like a relaxed and more stable mule feel. So, not just the size frame to consider, but also the geometry.

That's a nice idea. I'll have to give my shoes a clean first and will then look at doing that.
