I have been thinking about this for some time now, gatvol of repeats on dstv, paying R800 for premium (which by the way only have a few ok-ish channels). Me and my more beautiful other half are now looking at having ADSL installed,so that we can download movies/series,and watch it whenever we have time and when we are not cycling. Who else are doing the internet tv thing,is it worth it,because I heard stories about lines being made slow to hamper steaming ect (but I intend to download, not stream). Can anybody please give me some tips ect?

I went the same route.

No DSTV. Bought a Mede8r and have all my content on that. 3TB worth. More series and movies that I can watch.

Only thing I miss is sport. I am not a huge sports watcher but I always want to watch the major events.

I have an uncapped ADSL option, but get choked/ throttled/ reduced  regularly, which is not a huge issue if you are patient enough to wait for your downloads. It is not the best option if you plan on gaming and need line speed immediately (i think- not a gamer) I am not sure what a capped offering gives you in terms of being throttled, someone with this kind of package will need to comment.

I am pretty happy, what I've got serves my needs.

Done it.

For most people it's a big saving over DStv because they're already paying for ADSL. In your case the saving is less because you're incurring the cost of ADSL but I think you'll still come out ahead financially.

And you'll definitely watch better stuff.

I download more than I stream, and yes, the downloading is often throttled so I often let it run through the night.

You'll quickly build up a bank of material, more than you can watch.

We've also trying the apple TV / netflix route but this one is proving a little more tricky to get working.

No matter which backbone you are on they throttle the heck out of the uncapped lines.

Depends on your monthly usage, but, you can look at say a 200GB option and then they don't throttle that - ok, I lie, they sometimes do, but nowhere near as badly.

Not a gamer, had the idea to set up a wifi hotspot, download to laptop which is connected via hdmi cable to a tv. Thenwe can download movies and series, use the wifi for in-home connectivity (cellphones and tabs) and entertainment. What line speed do you guys recommend, 4mbps,6mbps or 10mbps?

Also killed DSTV about 4 years ago. Used To upgrade and sign up for the duration of the TDF and then kill it again but now I see they've closed that loophole :(.

Couldn't find a decent site to view the TDF.

Have terabytes of series/movies - end up discovering really cool stuff you'd never see on tv.

Im on 4, working fine. The wifi hotspot is cool- can run your phones and tablets off of it as well. Very convenient. If you can afford the faster line speed, go for it.

Have 4mbps at home. Use it for downloads, 2 cellphones and 1 tablet connected via wi-fi. Works 100%. Schedule downloads for bwteen 11pm and 6am so it doesn't slow down the line during the day.

I use Kodi (ex XBMC) to name, sort and generally makes things sorted and pretty. Its free and works great!

4 is fine. Laptop will work fine. We use a media player with a usb storage drive. I like that over the laptop because you dont have to turn on the computer and plug in the cable every time you want to watch something. also the cellphones and tablets can stream from the drive as well, so can watch movies anywhere in the house. Media player can wirelessly play stuff on the laptop too.

My media player was only R600. There are a whole bunch out there or the raspbery pi route if thats your thing.

Uncapped - throttled & shaped

Capped - unthrottled, unshaped

I'm on a 4Mbps line, 150GB per month through Afrihost and it ROCKS> Use it for gaming, and my ping is EXCELLENT. Also got XBMC running, with CouchPotato and SABNZBD in the background, but I just haven't set it up properly yet and we've lagged behind in the series. Nothing a short browse of torrentz.eu won't sort out. And when your torrents come down at 400Kbps, it's a revelation.

Try WIZIWIG for streaming sport, more than you can watch. And there are lots of other sports streaming sites too:

STOPSTREAM.TV

STREAMHUNTER

VIPBOX

and others.
