Rode with my mom on the tandem. We went past the scene. Just as you drop onto the blue route (?). That stretch of highway was littered with pileups that we went past.

Rest in peace buddy.

Rip

Saw him on the ground when coming past.

Could not understand how there could be a crash on that straight rode. All it takes is a quick look before you go past someone. I say that with no experience, since this was my first rode ride.

RIP to our fellow cyclist. Rode past the scene.

On a side note, any news on the old oom that was receiving CPR on Smitswinkel?

Didn't look good at all

A friend of mine who was marshalling on the Llandudno descent was seriously injured when a cyclist rode into him. My friend was taken by ambulance to Christiaan Barnard Memorial, and latest news is that he seems to be out of danger, but it looked pretty bad for a while. I gather the cyclist was also out cold - I hope he's okay. Please spare some thoughts for the marshalls who also lay it on the line.

If reports of the location of the incident are accurate, and my memory serve, the fatality must have been the accident involving 2B with pick up of some 2As.

I was literally coming to this thread to come bitch and moan about the absolutely horrendous peleton riding by Group 2B et al today. We had 2 accidents, both which I narrowly escaped.

I did not expect to read of this outcome. It is so sad. I normally ride in the 2As and Bs, and I have never seen such a bad day out from a bunch riding technique point of view

That the aggresiveness of the group’s riding cost someone his life today is really sad, and I wish we all take something from this and think next time we just want to latch onto a wheel

The size of groups might also need some rethink. After Smitswinkel shrunk the bunches, riding was awesome and so much better

The problems always seems to be the 1 - 2 bunches. And today I saw something I never saw before. Little groups forming around a tandem, riding at incredible speeds. Some of them with youngters as stokers.

Bunches from 3 onwards are just as big, and I have seen none of these issues riding in 3D today. If there were, please tell.

The dark-side of full road closure, guys riding like utter loons over the entire width of the road instead of holding a line. You see it at the other full closure events too.

We rode in 3G today and was sad coming down from wynberg to see the medics at work, did not know at that stage how serious it was. But my wife did mention this is the reason she does not prefer riding in big groups.Makes you think what is more important the risk of injuries (or even death) vs the reward of a better finish time. Now not saying that people dont get injured in other ways. Just that it feels personally that the risk is higher in thr groups.

on the other side of my comments. What a well organised race, serious FOMO for anyone not taking part I would say, the locals along the route really brought the spirit to the party and tried to thank as many as I could. For those guys and ladies on the hand cycles.. serious respect, as well as the riders with the kids in the trailers. Hope the cause got a whole lot of additional support through your efforts.

Marshalls, local authorities, and organisers thank you for your efforts, just experience friendliness all round.

To those that always complain there is not enough races in the south. ok you right it is an amazing place to have a race and really a shame that the roads don't lend themselves to a proper race as would think that roadclosures would be a requirement, talking about a road closure race just goes to another level.

on the downside.. did I miss the bar one stop??? kept looking for it but might have blanked out somewhere.

I think they cleared out the "unofficial" refreshment stands that were offered by sponsors and advertisers in previous years. Always thought it was a bit dodge that the race instructions clearly state that refreshment stations will never hand anything to moving cyclists while the unofficial stations are usually happy to do just that.

The CTCT 2018 was absolutely world class and gorgeous as per usual. Nice to have one of the greatest events back to winning ways

A super experience today. Cape Town showed off today and it was great privelage to have ridden this event after all the uncertainty leading up to it. So saddened by the news of the fallen rider. It could have been any of us. Heartfelt condolences.

In previous years we've seen riders taking selfies on those straight stretches of road.

I went pass this accident and glad that your friend is okay. He did not look in very good shape when I passed. Looked like the rider went strait into him and there was a lot of bleeding fromhis face. Cant understand how a rider could not have seen him. Hope you friend recovers well and thank him from all of the riders.

Had a great ride from 2G and the bunch worked well together.

What a amazing day to be on the bike.

I started in 4C just behind the club 21 guys in 4B. There was a heart attack I. The group ahead. The guy was in a 21 jersey on the ground and they were already doing CPR on him as we passed coming out of Simonstown on the way to Smitswinkel. It wasn’t looking positive at that stage from what I saw. Any news on that incident ?
