a couple of months ago, i was on my way to hermanus for a holiday, had my folks with me as well as my wife and kids, kids are aged 3 and 4.

as when i normally go on the N2 i stop at perigrin farmstall, my kids were minding their business in the little park there, when some dwoos decided he's/her's o so friendly dogs can run wild, as you can imagine these dogs barked, and nearly attacked my kids, thankfully some other dude who has dogs and kids, and my father came to their rescue.

now we did not find the owner of these, and i swear had he come my father, who this is first time i've seen that upset since i wrote off he's car when i was in high school, was ready to do some serious damage, lesson learnt from my side 2 angry okes is never a good thing, i played good cop, calmed him down and walked him and the rest of family back to the car.

my kids to date are scared sh!tless of dogs...

i don't mind dogs, i always wanted one, and while i agree the biggest knobs are their owners, i will do what it takes to defend myself and my family against them... all as Robbie has said

Had the EXACT same at Perigrine ....

With Maritz in my arms I politely asked the owner to PLEASE put their dogs back on a leash .....

Same thing at the beach at Onrus - despite CLEAR signs that dogs must be on a leash ...

I LOVE dogs !!  But man do I HATE some dog owners ....

The stuff being discussed in this topic under this thread banner is sure a receipe for disaster in the form of getting some trails closed on Tygerberg, just so that a landowner can prevent being sued or have his animals harmed while you defend yourself.

So if that big dog chase you down and start eating you just stand still and don't scream too loudly - look at the bigger picture, you are taking one for the team, would be very inconsiderate to spoil access to trails for other riders

Ja. I don't want to lose my trail access just because you don't know how to alpha a lion pretending to be a dog...

Just joking. You must do what you must to protect yourself.

But honestly, if I'm a farmer, and I allow mtb riders on my farm, and I had a lion masquerading as a woef, then I'll make sure that the trails don't come near my lionwoef. To protect my dog, the riders, and myself from lawsuits by riders whose legs were being used as toothpicks by my lionwoef.

On some of the farms in the Philipi and Bottelary areas the liondogs are kept in a large fenced off area and let out at night to roam and patrol. And I'm pretty sure they are only fed in the mornings.

OK so ran into this boy out at Hillcrest yesterday afternoon. Almost rode over him. Stopped just in time and backed away veeeery quickly. Strange this is that it was overcast and fairly chilly up there so they are not only out when it's hot.

Keep your eyes peeled...!

We had a close encounter on Sunday morning in Conties, small grass snake I think, I'm no expert but have a healthy respect to stay well clear!

Oooo that could ruin a person's ride if he got hold of you. Gotta admire such an amazing and powerful creature.

Fast moving metal frames on rubber weighing 3 tons on the one hand; snakes of all types sun tanning on the manicured trails on the other hand

Maybe the wobbly gym bike is your best best, Cupcake

The 3 ton metal frames I can hear & see from far away - they don't stalk me on the far side of a switch back or suddenly start moving a meter to my side when I'm slowly grinding up Spykers Hill.

Don't quite agree with Robbie that they are scared of me, few of the bigger buggers I encountered were clearly not intimidated by my presence. For some reason I saw more snakes on my last 2 rides at Hoogekraal/Welvergenoegd than I saw in 7 years of riding the Tygerberg trails. At the end of the 2nd ride this cupcake's nerves were shot!
