[Event] Cape Town Cycle Tour 2019

I generally plan my life around what windguru says. It's too far out to be accurate. Usually what happens is as you get closer to the day the wind prediction drops off a bit and often shifts up a day or two (eg what's currently forecasted for Friday becomes Sunday's forecast. The worrying thing is the lack of wind we've had this last week and also the lack of wind forecast for next few days, usually the south easter comes to collect its pound of flesh. I'd put money on it being windy next Sunday, but not as strong as currently predicted. Write that down...

I've recently moved from windguru to predictwind, currently there's medium wind forecast. Not ideal sub 3, nor cancel it conditions.

But let's not get panties in a knot either way before at least Wednesday people.

Sounds like a service delivery protest. Best you go burn some crap outside PPA offices soon if you want results

that would be the incorrect location. glad you're not organising a protest....

There should be no extra charge for the 2nd lap. End of story. Not interested a 2nd lap till they drop the 2nd entry fee

This... Never considered it because it doesn't make sense to pay twice. But that's just me. ????

Quick question, why? Why do you feel you are entitled to do the race twice, having only paid once?

its the same event.

all costs have already been incurred.

No roads have to be held open longer than the designated period.

No marshalls need to be paid overtime waiting for me

No traffic officer needs to eat extra doughnuts while I trundle along.

No extra medical expenses are incurred.

the 2nd entry fee is a discouragement tax, nothing else. the organisers don't really want the second lap because its an inconvenience as so few people actually do it.

The only addition cost is a little printed sticker that isn't worth R540. I'd rather go and spend that at a cafe along the route and cheer the backmarkers.

BTW nice choice of antogonisng words there Jase.... "entitled"

clearly you have a suitcase to be unpacked here neh

Haha, to be honest, it wasn't intentional, but it seems to have done the trick in waking you up on a Monday morning.

Maybe the right word would have been allowed? Or not, I feel entitled is fair in the context.

You paid the first entry to do the race once, logic then follows that you should then pay again to do it a second time? 1 entry=1 ride. Doesn't matter if no extra effort is put in for your lap, that everything is already setup, you can then argue that all the extra riders above their breakeven point should be for free. . .

Just saying.....

Not really, coming down chappies and llandudno in raging SE winds, the wind is constantly changing around the corners and bouncing back off the mountain..

I guess you missed the first line... "it's the same event"

By charging again they are making it two events and I have a problem with that in principle

Agreed i have done that one too many a  time. 100kgs of me and bike was picked up and tossed around like a toy.

But the organisers have i think learned their lesson. and FWIW if there is a raging South Easter you aren't going to see me on a bicycle - more like a wine farm in Franschoek :-).

I don't live in Cape Town but I have done this race 27 times and I don't bother with these wind forecasts. I don't even bother checking when I wake up at 3am on race day. When I get into my start chute, I look at the trees. In my 28 years of doing the race(the cancelled one included here) only once were the pre-race conditions sort of accurate and that was the cancelled one. Even 2009(? the windy one) the predictions the day before wasn't as bad as on the day.

I can easily understand some guys worrying about bunch riding and that is very understandable, even if you yourself are a very skilled rider, the guy next to you might not be and I will never insult someone for not riding due to that reason. But I will take the chance as I have a record to uphold. I will be slapping on my 55/88 deep sections and just ride. I am not fit enough this year to race anyway so will probably get dropped up Edinburgh drive, if not sooner.

On a side note, I got to the end of the blue route before being told the race was cancelled and other than the wind tunnel at the start that we had to struggle/walk/crawl through, the wind was strong but ride-able. In fact on the blue route there were times it was calm. I still have the picture of us stuck at the end of the blue route and the trees are stationary.

Spot on.

There will be weather on the day, whether that weather is windy, hot or rainy, it will be there. and being CPT there is no way to accurately predict what that weather will be doing around the entire route.

I also think the new start pretty much eliminates the tunnel effect of the old start so even in windy conditions we will still ride.

It shouldn't be the full cost again (not even close), but there does need to be an extra cost associated with riding twice. As a trivial example, people doing an extra lap will need more refreshments.
