Urgh I had to watch some of the video to see if I was right...

When he first started with the half marathon in 75mins story I said he wouldnt be able to handle the different muscles and impact associated with running unless he put in the time to get used to it.

Turns out I was right.

Give us the executive summary, his knees are heavily damaged, right?

Here, from the Freedom Challenge thread, is a different way to look at setting high goals.

The big difference is that when everything goes against him, MD just gets on with it and completes what he started:

Next challenge could be a sub 9 hour non stop dusi for van fail?

If we look at FC then we can see that 2 of the top three on the road currently- were on the podium at Dusi in 2006...

I would have expected shin splints and knees filled with sadness, which might still come.

For now he was saying ligaments and muscles were giving issues and he couldnt push as hard as he wanted to.

Running is an impact sport which is something so many people dont get!

I'm sure that most of the okes railing on the hub have yet to run a 1:30 half.

The difference is most okes on here don't publicly belittle a massive physical challenge (Everesting is easy with the right gearing) and then fail CATASTROPHICALLY to get anywhere near said challenge.

And then brush it off lightly and move on to the next belittling and catastrophic failure.

Relax. You're getting way to wound up about this.

Is there a rule that one must only speak of everesting in hushed reverent tones?

As to the next challenge, he ran a fast 1/2 with little training. I'll give him kudos for that! He committed to a tight timeline and went for it. Yes, he came up short, but that was always going to be the case, given his running experience. If he can build up his running conditioning, I have no doubt in my mind that he can run a 75min 1/2.

the mental strength it must have taken to keep going even though he saw he was not going to achieve his goal...#WhatsTheF@%kingPoint

I'm not wound up.

There's no rule that I know of but a little respect towards people that have achieved something whilst you have not would probably have gone a long way to not winding people up the wrong way.

You're really stretching. His whole 'with the right gearing' schtick is now disrespectful towards those who have everested?

I thought millennials were the entitled ones.

Tribalism at its finest

I'm not going to say a full witch-burning is ever justified, BUT from time to time we do need to give some critical feedback to hubbers.

Van Zweel rubbed allot of okes the wrong way with his first couple of posts but his tone on BikeHub has surely calmed down a little bit since then, which is surely in part due to the criticism he received.

So I think it is daft to expect hubbers to now suddenly not see the negatives of this oke anymore and forget the stuff posted before.

It will take time for people to turn around and we should allow them that, based on whatever VanZweel decides to post and put out into the universe.

Just calling "tribalism" is food for thought for all of us, but in this instance I think it is not entirely accurate

I think it's massively disrespectful to call Everesting easy. Especially if you've not done it. I'm pretty sure most people on here would agree with me on that particular point.
