Bikes for Trail Riding... The start

What do you guys do for hydration on extended rides considering all these bikes have space for only one water bottle?

On a mtb ride requiring more than 750ml of water, you are definately also gonna require a few snacks, a pump, bombs, tire plugs, a small first aid kit and probably somewhere to store your outer layer for when it warms up, or incase the weather turns. So a camelback is the way to go.

One bottle is usually enough for a 3 hour ride. Anything longer, and I get bored and go home.

On 35+ deg C days I'll fill up in one of the mountain streams.

1: mountain streams or available water.

2: fanny pack with a second bottle

3: hydration pack

If I'm buying a new bike this year, this will be at the top of the list. Just depends what the new Scott Spark will look like.

Look at these 2 beauties.  These 2 and the Tranny ...... are the 3 nicest bikes ive seen in a long long time

I love the seat stay that looks like it forms part of the top tube at first glance. Drool worthy

Agreed it has the best lines ive ever seen on an MTB.  Very similair to the tranny actually.

Looks fun. Next bike is going to be a much shorter travel trail / AM bike and hopefully back the the Tranny. Will be interesting to see what they do with the Smuggler now as that was a 115 and then 120 travel BCXC style bike for all day riding up and over and then down decent hills. The original downcountry bike.

Love Tranny but was sad when they 'grew up' the scout and it lost the manic stupidity of the first one. Same with the Smuggler from V1 to V2 and the SBG / short offset. It kind of killed the thing everyone love about the V1. Still looking for a V1 Smuggler or a V1 Scout for a +1.

Interestingly Evil never went that way when they went from the Following to the new Following MB. Head angle stayed 'unfashionable' and didn't slack out and it still stayed as awesome as ever.

Rocky Mountain Instinct

Previous generation 130 mm Instinct 950 (2014) with a 140 mm Pike and too many upgrades to mention. A really nice bike for Stellenbosch, wouldn't mind a new bike in the future but I'm keeping this one alive till then.

Take me there.. Red Phoenix has to be my favorite trail right now. Its not the most Gnarly, steepest or has the best jumps.. but I just love the continuous flow of speed and especially the middle part where you just bomb straight down with a ravine next to you and a wall on your right.

I could do laps of it all day. Would love a few more airtime options.. but its darn close to the perfect "trailbike trail"..

ha... I like it too. It's good, it sneaks into my top 3 at Jonkers.

In Order of 'fun' I would go Canaries (I think called Ace of Spades now) top to bottom, all splits, Then Iron Monkey top to bottom (same start as Canaries) then Red Phoenix.

Plumber and Status are rad but involve risk, so while fun, they aren't 'fun'. I like the whole package including the steep climb and contour path to the very top of fire hut, but the actual trail is a bit boring. I cannot for the life of me bring myself to ride Never ending.... That trail burns my soul for some reason.

The river trails are actually quite fun... I do miss the old canaries through the pines. Climbing those was a great way to start a big day at Jonkers!

Sjoe.... I need to go there asap

That new climb trail is proper class and soon it will have lots of coverage.

I'm the same with Never Ending.

Definitely.. The climb trail just takes the 'oh golly this is a slog and a long way round' out of the initial gear up and go.

The guys in KZN and Cape are really fortunate to have real trails. We get excited about a 1km flow trail with maybe a 20m drop in elevation. With what we have we could 90% of the time ride hardtails.

So true... We have such riches in the area. But only a handful of steep and scary trails, so you can actually enjoy 99% on what is on offer on a 'normal' bike which means you don't have to lug a long low and slack beast around.

Efficiency and fun.

We have that in spades

Road trip I guess.

Karkloof classic and DH on Facebook.

Look out for vids of Hilton Turvey. That dude is unfrikkenbelivable on a bike. Last I saw of him he was riding a 29" Spez Stumpy 150 and jumping 10m road gaps with it.

You can ride downhill with minimal pedaling for more than 10km out in Karkloof. It's amazing.

If you get a chance to go on holiday with the intention of riding a bike, then that's where I'd go.
