Hypothetical dream build (mamil style)

So as if my bike was self indulgent enough, here are some shots of my almost complete bike park - These photos don't do it justice and I will get one of the guys from my LBS to make a video when the track is ready to be tested in a few days

It's super flowy, big berms and a great climb back to the start - these photos are from a 150m section of the 1km track - its going to be fast and really test my brakespost-81229-0-29406800-1600161799_thumb.jpgpost-81229-0-28619000-1600161822_thumb.jpgpost-81229-0-54021300-1600161842_thumb.jpgpost-81229-0-36392800-1600161889_thumb.jpgpost-81229-0-29625800-1600161913_thumb.jpgpost-81229-0-67069300-1600161936_thumb.jpg

Hendrik is a machine and stamps the entire course on his own after Rob has done his layout, sculpting and primary track compressingpost-81229-0-92316100-1600162219_thumb.jpgpost-81229-0-24320400-1600162396_thumb.jpg

In other news I have bought this little machine  - its the baby brother of the one Rob used to build my track and he is finishing the track with it.

My business is on life support and I will shut down in Feb after 20 years (covid to some extent but mostly the governments inability to regulate Chinese owned factories in SA)

With this little machine I plan to skill up and find work locally - there is a gap because these are very specialised but it's a whole lot different than sitting at a desk running spreadsheets, costing and tell other people what to do.

I had a go last night and then barely slept - there are less controls on a small aeroplane

I am going to build a little rental cottage so the track would be available to the guests

I am thinking along the same lines. I want to get an operators license for similar bigger machinery

"Looks outside at 30 square meter garden in disdain"

Wayne that's better than the bike! Very nice indeed.

Purple Pyga always welcome - trail and new bike test ride on Friday knee permitting - I’ve hurt it building the bridge

All I can say is I want your problems Wayne, seem much better than mine! Enjoy

Easy, spend 20 years building up a business and then let the government tear it down with BEE and their indebtedness to China - then go explain to the sole breadwinners employed by you that they have no jobs

After that take a leap of faith buying a second hand mini tlb in the hope that you can feed your family using skills you don’t currently have

That’s the thing with problems, none are bigger than our own

Living the dream!

Build a track at the local primary school, took three years of my event entry fees to fund, just for the school to decide a rugby field suit their needs better.

The rugby field was not build the last 30 years, cant see it being done post Covid.

Wayne their is a few well respected trail builders in SA (Hilton, Bennet, Conrad) always willing to share their knowledge.

Personally made use of a guide from IMBA, in our region earth erosion is a problem and also the soil.

The joy to see people ride your trail, priceless.

you take the living in South Africa bit into the equation and you would be blown away by how many of the excotic smaller brand don't give a cr@p about even responding

I suppose "Hi, my name is Wayne and I live on a mountain in South Africa" is not that different to "Hi, my name is Abednego and I work on a oil-rig".....

Nice track Wayne! I'm in George next weekend and would love to give you my personal opinion and a high five on that nice build. You might need that dropper post now  :whistling:

Would have loved to but wont make it since I'm doing that Funduro in George already on the Saturday.

Bit of a sidetrack, but its your thread right. Are you thinking of doing landscaping kind of stuff? Or trails?

Having built my fair number of trails in my life, with sweat and blood, I must say I get so jealous of the guys that can build a km of trail in a few days, while It would takes me hours to build one berm by hand(not that its my job)

But like any industry, we have to keep up with the times. As sad as it may be, guys building by hand just wont keep up with the guys with machines. The question will remain, If the guys with machines can actually build trails that flow and ride well. People like Hilton, Bennet etc learnt by hand and use the machines when necessary.

I personally get a pain in the behind when people build what looks like wheelchair access in the high mountains, just because they have the luxury of having a machine. I think flow trails have their place, I love them, but the ultimate is probably a combination of that and natural. In my opinion, the best trails are where the trails harness what the landscape offered without forcing something thats not there, while leaving some of the trail semi natural so we still have a use for suspension. Each to his own though..

Enjoy your new toys!

I can say that for the forseeable future I won't be a trail builder - Rob who built my trail is the owner of the Garden route trail park and if you've ever been there, you will know that he knows his sh!t.  What he's laid out I couldn't imagine and I think the real trail builders have a vision and look at a piece of land and see things 3 dimensionally - right now I am struggling to dig a hole with the machine.

My plan with the machine is to do jobs in tight spaces and help people out (for money) on small holdings/farms with things like septic tanks, paths and fencing holes.  Eventually landscaping once I get the hang of the machine

If I built a trail, I can guarantee it would be rubbish

Whilst I respect those trail builders who can build by hand, to me it seems non productive and definitely not cost effective - it would be very difficult and take very long for someone to do this job by hand on this soil and I'm guessing as the customer I'd be paying more

My trail is probably rideable today but my knee is tender (from building the bridge) and I am pretty much dead certain to crash at full health - fortunately it won't be that fast in the beginning but ultimately the downhill sections are going to be very fast once its bed in

PS, DM me if you want to try my machine built track, about 20 minutes from George
