Motorists vs Cyclists.... again

He then pulled off on the right side of the road and picked up a rock and as we came down he started running across the road to be in our lane. 

 

Luckily we had some time and made a u-turn to avoid any confrontation. Luckily he then left - went down a road where he pulled off. Picture uploaded where he went in. 

Update... Black Hummer H2. Paarl registration plates. Sorry to the GP guys on here... I didn't mean to offend you 😂

Apparently the driver who hit the cyclist was drunk. He was taken in custody in fish hoek. Subsequently he has been dismissed from his work!

This can't stop there. Drunk driving is a scourge that has to be eliminated with harsh penalties (bordering on severe) and effective policing.

Yes, I agree its a terrible video, i could hardly watch it with a straight face, nevermind twice, and it has me paranoid about road riding all over again….but maybe people seeing it puts the reality of it out there.

Society has become so desensitised to violence, SA probably more so than other places, that we tend to laugh stuff like this off. Maybe seeing it,  realising its real and a real person (your husband, son, father, brother) makes it hit home a bit harder. Thats all thats left really.

In Durban for some reason feels a bit safer? Or is it I pick safe places.

I'm not understanding, did he get out the car and plan on throwing the rock at you? Unprovoked? If so he's a complete mental case.

I'm not really able to comment about Durban. Maybe in town and surrounds around the beach front and stadium? I don't know the area too well apart from business trips there.

cyclists on the Big Bay Melkbos cycle path need to yield to motorists exiting the estates(there are signs stating that). the stop sign is for motorists who are the entering the 'beach road'. they don't need to stop for you (but in my experience they do)

That is what the sign says.

STOP means stop. There is no getting around that.

If you cannot distinguish the difference then there's no point in debating further.

Context: when there is an oncoming car heading from Melkbosstrand to Big Bay then you'd expect a car standing at a stop to remain stationary until the oncoming car has passed. If a cyclist passes at that same time then the car ought to keep still.

Perhaps I don't either, but I've always understood it and read it as cyclists are essentially cars when it comes to right of way etc. So pedestrians wins then cars = cyclists. Ofcourse some cars treat cyclists as neither pedestrians or other vehicles as the 'law of gross tonnage' seems to apply in their minds
