Drafting should still not be allowed in TRI, it should be "time trial" scenario, but that's just mho.

Nah... I think in sprint distance scenario you are racing the people around you with the people around you. The course is short enough for attacks and gaps to happen all over the place. One can draft (wake ride) in the swim and pace on the run. It makes sense the theme is carried through when it comes to Olympic/Sprint distance racing.

For longer IM races it is still illegal and it stays a man vs the elements scenario for the ride. But that is mostly because there is no qualification AND there are laps, so a bunch of Pro's will kill or be killed by bunches of Try athletes

It is a complicated issue. In my opinion the advantage to be gained from drafting in the swim is less than when cycling. Obviously it also depends on the conditions... if the ocean is rough drafting becomes harder etc..etc..etc. Not sure how much benefit pacing in running provides.

Also much easier to kick an overzealous "swim drafter" in the face  ( there goes the goggles) than to get rid of some pesky specialist runner on your wheel  :)

Anyway... this debate is not for this thread.

The "new" rules probably make for better tv viewing but I fully agree with you.

Chatted to some TSA officials years ago and they thought it was mostly to avoid having to police drafting in the sprint format. The swim is too short to break up the field so policing drafting in groups get really difficult.

I'm a terrible swimmer and average runner so I'm all for no drafting - it is my only weapon!

Yeah, I agree with Shebeen.

Alan is not expected to medal, he has not placed top 3 in Elites yet. It would be unexpected. I suppose when one considers 'medal hopefuls' one would include him as, well, there IS hope, but he wouldn't fall under the 'likely medalist' list.

He is close though....

He is good but there are some serious talent that he has to get behind him to medal and i don,t see that happening

So do guys ride in bunches and take turns on the front? While on the TT bars? Hectic stuff.

Full TT bars are illegal. Just them lil stubby ones are allowed.

It is mostly pack racing. Swim hard enough to be in the peleton, hide in the ride then run the fastest. Basically a running race with some foreplay.

As a refresher, the result sheet for Rio 2016.

I honestly did not remember that the Maincheese finished 7th.

I am less surprised to see AMP achieving a top 10 result, sort of remembered that.
