You’d think there are so much more other pressing areas of concern in Cape Town, like poverty and crime or even repairing the poor quality of our roads. But lets rather waste our time and money on something absolutely pointless that affected probably 1 Karen.

It doesn't have to be mutually inclusive. There are multiple departments that can address multiple relevant issues simultaneously. The City has a difficult job of serving the needs of the full range of the income (or lack thereof) spectrum.

Only rode there once, I always use the road otherwise, think it’s a good call to ban bicycles though as pedestrian often randomly change directions and cohabitation isn’t great.

wouldn’t mind banning pedestrians from the cycle paths actually 😜

Ok, I'll wade in to the topic....

Why are you capetonians complaining? You should be embracing it and working with the city to get what you want. You know - give a little, take a little scenario. You're all blessed to have those kind of cycling facilities on your doorstep, yet you all complain its not close enough to the sea, or it has a set of FT's riding rental bikes, or heaven forbid - a runner pushing a pram along with his tin lid in it.

Its almost as if everything done is never good enough

Up here in the big smoke we have to drive somewhere to ride in relative safety. And even then, you still have a good chance of getting run down and killed by a crazy motorist at 6am in the morning.

The city has the muscle power to just stamp out a rule that pisses everyone off, and working against the city will just end up in them flexing that power. Remember, they also take into consideration the amount of pedestrians, runners, cyclists, FT's on rentals etc. And they also take into consideration that everyone needs their place in the sun

Be grateful you even have a cyling lane along the beach front

Right, who's got the popcorn?

We are too quick to accept and be grateful for mediocrity. Just because we have a cycle lane does not mean the City automatically gets a pass. Our Roads are in a shitty condition with potholes the same potholes there from 10 years ago. If you don’t complain then nothing will get done.

And again regarding this particular issue, I honestly think its a complete waste of time and money. The promenade is fine as is.

don't want to beleive that some random person sat in office one day and decided "**** cyclist - we'll ban them from the prominade because reasons"

That is exactly what I believe unfortunately.

Edit ... Not quite what I believe. I think the decision is driven by someone who regards cyclists as as road vermin who need to be relegated.

I've taken my nieces on their bikes along their several times and I've walked with my mother in a wheelchair and jogged with my SO. ... Always a pleasure, no issues.

The issues I encounter as do most of us are on the roads where there is a clear need for regulation and policy change and on those there is complete indifference.

Reminds me of the urban legend of the Seapoint Karen complaining about the nudity at a certain seaward spot along this stretch ....it was found later when asked to show the evidence that she needed to climb on top of a cupboard and balance precariously over the balcony to see the "action" over the wall there!🤣

Like the pervy couple in their 70’s who worked hard to see past all the trees and hedges whenever the GF and her and my female friends enjoyed the pool.

Didn’t recognise him when he approached me in the shop, after he identified himself I held a hand over my nose and said “Sorry mate, didn’t recognise you without the wall."

Ban the dog walkers too...

I have no skin in this fight. I couldn't care what the city do in that larny part of the world. They tried to tell us who could do what where when in Muizenberg and no one listened.

We are happy.

I sort of see it as the same as making sections/areas of beaches the surfing/swimming/kiting zones to avoid too much cross pollination and friction. People are, for whatever reason, becoming less and less able to reasonably self govern their behaviour, so I'm all for black and white rules.

It's just a pity that the kids are the ones losing out due to the actions of adults.

So in essence it is basically just because people have forgotten how to adult, or worse, never learned.

Exactly...

I can't stand it when people behave like fools, get caught and then say 'well, technically, I wasn't actually breaking the law'

No, but you were being a knob and you know it.

Eliminating this is easier than trying to teach people how to behave courteously as evidently, their parents already failed at this

"Our recommendation is as follows:

  • Pedestrians should have exclusive use of the Sea Point Promenade from Mouille Point to the Sea Point Pavilion swimming pool; and
  • cyclists on peddle bicycles, skateboarders, and rollerbladers should share the sidewalk (pavement) on the sea-side of Beach Road; and
  • no e-bikes, e-scooters, or motorised devises should be allowed on the sidewalk on the sea-side of Beach Road or on the promenade."

My problem with the above is that they are not just banning cyclist but rollerbladers and Skateboarders as well.

This does unfortunately restrict mums and dads taking their little ones out for a walk either using their little scooters, skateboard, rollerblades etc

more and more and more regulation that favours the baby boomers

What a joke. "Claimed risk of bikes hitting pedestrians" with no actual evidence of these being reported.

Yet, the road 65m away, there have been many car accidents and cars hitting cyclists. How about they remove cars from beach road then if the city is worried about making the place safer.

This makes perfect sense now. Clearly this city that purports to care so much about cyclists, in reality, doesn't . . . cyclists must get off the roads, Cyclists must got off the sidewalks. Cyclists must get off the cycle paths (referring to the green cycle lanes in town and the absolute abortion by the Paarden Island section).

Where the heck are we supposed to ride then? And then people wonder why mountain biking is taking off like it is.

that is going through the Aussie Parliament as we speak. I think they're still debating on whether Chinese or Vietnamese paper is better

You know, I don't even know if you're joking or not. The world is so messed up lately that would totally not make me bat an eyelid if it was so. Those Aussies, Kiwis, Canadians and Californians have lost the plot to the extent that this is entirely plausible.

Honestly. Way more pressing things that the City of Cape Town need to focus on. Also who is going to police this? Taking more resources away from our already dry and struggling police force just to stop okes riding bikes by the beach... A bit silly if you ask me.

Karen rant over 😅
