A friend of mine went to see "The Wall" at a cinema in Jo'burg every day for a fortnight back in the day,

Can't remember which movie house it was on at but it was a smaller independent I think, rather than one of the big ones.

Kicking this with your barefoot on a cold Saturday morning.

I still have my super springbok rugby ball. thought it might be worth something eventually.

dunno about that. born in 1980, so we started playing with these new "latex" balls in about std4. they were much better!

Then the thing with kicking tees started (andre pretorious is the only current or recent guy i know of who still uses sand), but out goal kicker was a cheapskate so just took a knife to a yellow margerine container to make his own tee. it worked, but was embarassing when someone thried to throw it to him.

If you grew up surfing in the 80's you definitely owned some Instinct gear. Originally established in South Africa in 1979 by World Surfing Champion Shaun Tomson, it was one of the most recognized surf brands throughout the 1980’s. Instinct was synonymous with surfing legends Tom Carroll and Barton Lynch, who were both team riders for the clothing label.

They also had one of the most innovative ad campaigns that we've ever seen from a surf brand. Who can forget their classic one-liner ad's like " It's simple, either you get the wave...or it gets you!" and "Waiting for waves is OK. Most people spend their lives waiting for nothing!"

The brand suffered from the tail-off in the retail market in the 90's, but an attempt was made to relaunch it in 2006, although this was short lived. Pity - cos they would have been as relevant today as they were 30 years ago.

I remember they took advantage of some tax breaks and moved the factory to Maseru.

The tag line was something like "driven by ocean"

and then on the back of the label it said "Made in the mountain Kingdom of Lesotho"

I used to go to His Majesty's and Colosseum in Commissioner Street as well

Now that is going back!  My parents used to talk about going there in the 50's - back in the day of silent movies when a pianist would do the sound track.

I didn't grow up surfing, but I got given a hand-me-down Instinct jacket from one of my older cousins, either in the late 80's or early 90's.

Was this the cinema at the bottom of, or at least very close to the bottom of the Carlton center ? If so, that's where we saw Battlestar Galactica in surround sound.

In the mid 70's there was a passage running under the road from the Carlton to the Kine Centre. It was filled with pinball machines and the like. Also lots of take away shops. It was called The Connection. Used to be the hangout place on Saturday afternoons before movies or ice skating. Edited by Blokman
