It takes a large amount of effort to develop software, and to do it just about bug free (which is mostly my experience using Strava) means that the effort to dev and test takes a large chunk of time. This is very costly, and I can understand that Strava would need to monetize the value-adds in order to maintain the development stream.

Folks must not lose sight that Strava is not a N.P.O. and would need to turn a profit at some stage. For them to offer subscription for members wanting to make use of their value adds makes perfect sense, and as they have made clear, if you do not want to pay, you can remain on the free package.

I am using the subscription service at present, and find it to be much cheaper than alternatives such as Training Peaks, Today's Plan etc. But then, I am not a pro athlete, and perhaps they might need more advanced training feedback which they might not get from Strava.

I wonder if there is a price change coming.

As far as I can see, mine is up for renewal in August, for a 'massive' R240 for a year, so not even a cappuccino per month.

Lucky you - as far as I can see there are only one option nowadays and it is definitely more than R240 per year.  Not sure how you managed to get yourself signed up for that but don't change anything...

I feel sad.

I don’t have any KOMs

Hit me up after the crackdown, we'll work on one (or two) for you. There's one around here that I have currently, it's a freaking downhill, and complete with bike and kit I weigh less than 70kg's. Should be within anyone's reach. (I'm not saying anyone's large, I'm just saying, some KOM's are easier to hold for a moment than others...)

Edit, I just realised I feel fat. My bike is currently below the UCI weight limit :excl: :cursing:

Hmm, probably still the old Summit pricing then, in which case I'm in for a big increase.

Heaps of people moaning. People threatening to cancel Strava because some features are no longer FREE..... This is a snapshot of what’s wrong with the world today. We want, we demand, but we don’t want to pay for it.

If it means that much to you, pay, it’s the price of a 2 coffees.

$5 is a bit more than two coffees. Unless they're Irish

I have no problem paying for an app I literally use every day

But as Savage mentioned on Twitter, big part of the appeal is that almost everyone you know is on it. I hope that doesn't change.

Which goes back to the point that it's appeal is that it's social media for sportsers.....

It's basically just an orange Facebook  :whistling:

Jip. And I'm not interested enough in the digital piepie-swaai aspect to pay for it. If the API remains open for third party apps like hub tiger than I'll continue sending my rides over from Polar land to strava land.

Those KOMs will mean a lot less if half the riders on them vanish overnight.

Talking about Facebook. A friend of mine posted pictures of her last ride on Tygerberg just before lockdown on Facebook. She, completely on her own with photos of empty trails, empty vineyards etc. With all the appropriate hashtags #corona #socialdistancing #soloriding etc

On Strava though... "Group Activity" with 8 other people including some nice group photos posted by her riding buddies  ^_^

I guess people aren't supposed to be on FB AND Strava

I haven't made a strava in a long time.

The weird back patting like4like follow4follow nature of the thing weirded me out. If I went by what was cool, I haven't ridden in years as it isn't on strava!

Most wont, people threaten, people dont act.

The kind of person angry enough about their segments being behind a pay wall are likely to pay for it. It it didn't matter to them they wouldn't be angry in the first place.

And if those people do decide to turn off their account, the uploaded rides will still be there.

Will be quite funny if they get a Uh-Oh email and then not being bale to log on to see it

Cheers

But I think what I’ll do is suck your wheel up a hill to just before the summit and then you can back off so I can pass you and get a KOM

But seriously, I would not mind the odd ride together post apocalypse.
