Suddenly our decrepit Froomage is looking quite sprightly among his company

Yeah, a single day can be very long in the TdF. It is one race where a person should rather not make any predictions. Today was a lottery.

Looking at the overhead, it looks like Caleb was moving up and as Merlier stood up to start his sprint, he touched Caleb's wheel behind him, which can easily happen when you go from sitting to standing, and the rest is history. Sagan was just an innocent bystander as you can clearly see the gap between him and Caleb before the crash.
Caleb looked like he had the speed though, so I reckon he would have won if they all got to the line. Instead he's out with a broken collarbone

I just feel it for Ewin and Sagan....Ewin was really looking to go fir the win today

And a very terrible day for Geraint and Roglic, seems like JV are going through some rough times.

I think its more a case of Caleb needing to go Left to find the space to sprint as Merlier is taking the space to the right. Then its an unfortunate matter of timing your pedal pressure vs the rider in front of you. A Sprinter will look to minimise the gap between their kick and the rider they need to overhaul. If you apply pressure a fraction too early and you want to change direction then this is the outcome

how strong is that Canyon for not failing under the pressure of Caleb's front wheel....?!!

Good explanation.

Apologies to Sagan from me for insinuating his shoulder played a part in this crash.

He rides on to fight another day.

I'm finding this difficult to watch. I feel like I'm rubber necking a tragedy.

The nerves are frayed. I reckon there will be a ton more crashes before the 1st rest day. The jitters are real

And the stress for GC teams will just increase as they don't want to be caught behind these crashes on the crazy technical run-ins.

Looks to me like Caleb front wheel was kicked out like it did because it was overlapping Merlier's back wheel (to rhs from the back) and when Tim kicked (as in pic 2 above) his bike tilted to the right and  it knocked Caleb's front wheel, and there was a gyroscopic reaction, as we see.

Racing accident.

Orla Chennaoui tweeted that some riders are are considering some form of protest in the morning. Unsurprising really. But what to do? It's suck a fluid thing. Pretty sure we've seen dodgier run-ins that have ended without incident

Don't think MvdP gets enough credit for the team player he is.

He could just as well have made an argument that he can win more stages by himself. But he is quite happy to pull for the team and that made a world of difference today. Not many times that a Yellow Jersey does that kind of lead out for his Sprinter

Saw a tweet from a rider saying that the UCI is quick to ban Aero tucks and what-not in the name of safety, but dodgy run-ins like today sees zero reaction?

I think a protest can be beneficial to the sport.

Thomas actually moved up 2 places today - so at this rate a crash a day will see him in yellow with a week to go to Paris

Or, others dropped positions, eg. Roglic (4th to 20th), Vingegaard (9th to 23rd), and Bilbao (11th, now 24th).

It like the glass half full or half empty thingymajiggy. ????????
