Back in the day when we were riding 6 sprockets on the back and all were fixed together and the freebody screwed into the hub it the sprockets were call a sprocket set. Then Shimano came up with a system where we could change an individual sprocket to tailor the gear ratios to your own liking it became known as a Sprocket cluster. at the same time the freebody was built into the hub and a 7th sprocket added. So "cluster" became the generic name.
