A customer of mine owns a whiksy distillery right here in Copenhagen has tried a few times to convert me but man oh man I just cannot acquire the taste.

Then you will definitely not like the whisky i drink. I like the peaty stuff.

Spoken like a man who has never tasted a fine Irish whiskey, not that Scottish tequila masquerading as something special

Scottish, Irish - all tastes the same in a Don Pedro or Irish Coffee...that's the only decent use for Whiskey anyway 🙂

Okay okay I was wrong - it's great in a Hot Toddy also!

no an engineer, so I like data!

but this is pretty basic. it's a navigation race. and people can't seem to find this turnoff. Maybe they should spend some of the budget on a neon sign or something for the start of it. but seriously following breadcrumbs on a screen is not hard. It's near the bottom of the bo swaarmoed so you don't have to go all the way back up, it's about 4km and 70m up once you hit the big road (and obviously realise you've gone wrong)

Just letting the tracker run through at 4096 speed and ticking off the riders who missed this one, again. Apologies if any mistakes made here, just a quick peek. I'm not

Just a comment on that - I remember few years back Farmer Glen had ambitions of making the Sani2C an unmarked route as well where you had to follow a GPS instead of route markers. My primitive Garmin could do the breadcrumb thing but if it wasn't for the 1000s of other cyclists I certainly would have gotten lost a few times. On more than one route split it just wasn't clear from the breadcrumbs which road to take, (much easier to follow the 100s of bicycle tracks instead). I also recall a few times my Garmin screaming at me that I am off course when I was quite obviously on the correct road. (On the last day I took a wrong turn along with half my starting group and ignored my Garmin's warning beeps because I didn't believe it anymore) - based on that experience I don't quite share your faith that following breadcrumbs is that easy on something like the Munga.

I agree

It's a weird thing for me having grown up navving with maps and a compass. I have never done a bike race using GPS na, but a few 100 milers and this year a 200 mile running race. My fenix 6X pro screamed at me a number of times for being off course despite definitely being on the course and the number of times I 'sped' past a junction only to have to turn back was infuriating.

I can only imagine at bike speeds how easy it is to miss turns, especially when exhausted and sleep deprived.

To be fair, doing pretty much anything while sleep deprived is difficult!

I really want to do the Munga next year. I'm going to keep an eye on the classifieds for a discounted entry, unless anyone wants to sponsor me. 20 inch bike for charity!

Joberg2c has been GPS nav for a good few years now, so I guess it works on that route.

but yes, you are just reinforcing my point.

it is a skill.

Being able to follow a kml loaded onto your headunit is a skill. it's worth practicing. especially when you're tired.

being able to ride down a rocky descent is a skill. it's worth praciticing

being able to unpack your kit, go through a transition, get your rest/nutrition and repack is a skill. it's worth praciticing

being able to ride on sand/corrugations is a skill. it's worth practicing.

anyway to calibrate myself i just had a look at the munga route, took a ranomd section RV3 to RV4, loxton to sutherland. people will be moeg there.

it's 213km, and there are 21 possible junctions. mostly you just go straight, only at 5 do you need to do a left or right.

Im sure enough people here are sadistic enough to see you attempt it. They all pretend to be all ‘humanitarian’ and BS but all they really want to see is you suffering over 1000km on 20” wheel on corrugated rosds Haha. Thats me for sure. Put any label you want on it, the sadist in me will support you fully🤣

edit:

…or is this you looking to justify a new fully custom carbon/titanium 20” squishy mini monstercross bike👀

Also, the munga has enough entries now that I feel there can be another class: open class ito bike bit you are only allowed to ride at night because you MUST navigate using the stars only lol

I'd definitely be keen on one of my 20 inch bikes. Maybe prudent to do some of Ray's 500 challenges and see how I go before diving into the big guy, but it's pedalling and sleep depravation. I have plenty of experience at both.

Let's see what we can do. There is a year to go.

Please make sure someone is videoing you. There's Aardvark holes on the trail big enough to swallow a 26inch wheel with room to spare. So a 20inch should make for some great entertainment for the rest of us.

Yes . A lady friend’s Munga came to an end 165km from Bloem in 1 of those .  She was in Mediclinic until yesterday

Nasty - hope she's healing well. I remember the worst ones were close to Bloem on the 2018 edition. Was a monstrous one about 10km past WP2 that could have swallowed a bakkie.

I am totally gutted to have at to pull the plug at 1060km. Unfortunately  I could not ride any further looking down at my top tube. I would have had an ugly crash.

The legs were there. My neck wasnt.

There are some hardcore okes here on the hub and I am sure some of them have experienced shermers neck. Not pleasant.

Anyway, no race report from me, my opinion of giving a race report when you had a DNF was clearly stated in the great Hub fight of 2017.

Anyway, I have to get on with life. Sorry Cois, really wanted to show that I could fight hard, as you have shown us all that you can.
