@J Wakefield Honest question here: With the showing of Tadej during this season, especially tDF, world champs and European champs, what is the general feeling among other teams/pros? Are they motivated to improve in order to compete with Tadej or is it a case of hoping Tadej does not race, in order to have a chance of actually winning something?

I can just imagine how difficult it has to be for pros to continually improve, just for a small shot at victory in the current era.

As a professional you should always want to improve, how much is possible? that is always an unknown in many areas.

A small window into the mental side of professional sport:

The factor that drives high performers such as professional athletes is their capability to focus on intrinsic goals, processes and systems. Every team performs best when they achieve a high degree of mastery over their own preparation and team alignment to standards and strategies.

Focusing or being distracted by the once-in-a-generation performer like Tadej would be an extrinsic focus. However, how to combat an individual that can coast away at 379 watts / 62 kgs for an hour after 5 hours or racing (or something like that) is, what we call in Souf Effrika, 'n 'moerse kopkrap' for race directors and team management.

So, attentional control is the word often used in the high-performance environment - focusing on ourselves, no one else. Focusing on our controllables, nothing else. Minding our priorities, no other. Of course, it is easier said than done not to be haunted by the superior performance of the Slovenian.

Consistency and persistence in focusing on self-improvement and team goals is the mindset challenge for men like Jonas, Remco, Primoz, etc. A bit like Ganna or Kung wondering how to topple Evenepoel in the race against the clock.
