Most races require a "CSA day license" .... if you do 3 races per year, just buy a CSA annual license.

Last year the 40km started just too early for the front runners to do two laps .... If I recall correctly it was a bit before 9:00 when the 40km groups started. Heck, it might have been just after 9:00 .... just recall a few interesting "options" for those wanting to slip in and do their two laps .....  Guess this is a moving goal post as each year's entries differ ....

Hey Guys just have 2 questions:

1. Best area to stay ? (assume somewhere close to the start>)
2. IS it best to collect your bike the day before or the morning of the race (will use bike transport company from JHB/PTA)

Thanks

the day before for sure, you want to test ride it to ensure all is 100%. Last thing you want to do is run around on the morning for mechanical assistance.

Test Ride 100%

Took my bike to the LBS to replace the groupset last year. Got it the day before the race, with literal minutes before the shop closed.

Did a quick pedal up and down the street at home and everything checked out okay.

Next day, "Hoopla" and we're off. As I get on to Nelson Mandela Blvd I hear a loud snapping sound and stop. That's when I notice the chain link was not properly seated and had begun to come undone.

I wasted 15 minutes trying to fix it, gave up and started the walk of shame back to the start before one of the motorcycle mechanics came to my assistance.

Thanks to him I managed to finish the day.

Lesson learnt!

1. Anywhere really will be fine. Green Point would be first prize. I've been cycling in & out from home for the past couple of years no matter my fitness level. It's literally only a couple of minutes quicker with the car. As you still need to account for morning traffic, find parking & still try squeeze in a short warmup, therefore I just find the cycling more time effective. I always end up on +-145kms for the day.

I would love to be cycle from home, but that means doing the N1 past Woodstock, so I just drive to the V&A and park there.

I hear you but at that time of the morning you will have the M5 interchange all to yourself to safely take the route past Amazon Offices where you will literally link up with a couple cycling groups all coming from Southern & Northern Suburbs.

yup. i got it last week but it is so windy i didn't want to share it here.

LOL, that wouldn't even surprise me with the way the Cape has been blown to shreds this summer. It would be safe to bank on a day of insane wind most likely.

For sure - still burns me that they made that new road, redid the existing stretch of Liesbee parkway, audited the traffic there, saw that it is the ONLY viable route into town for bicycles and was (is) heavily used by cyclists and did SFA to accommodate NMT.

I rant internally like the old man I am every time I see it.

I think it is now more dangerous to go through there on a bike.

Asking for an E-Bike friend. Point 3.5.3 regarding motor power, that cant be right surely? Most full powered e-bikes put out more than 250w of assistance?

Yes, this (larger) section is 100% aligned with the SANS regulations pertaining to motor vehicles, specifically the section that relates to what constitute a bicycle.

Weight, power, and maximum assist speed all being a direct copy of the European regulations.

American spec imported e-bikes often have an assist level up to 32km/h (20mph).

The maximum power output is an ongoing debate in both Europe and America.  Until such time that Europe updates their regulations South Africa is unlikely to change the SANS standards in this regard.  If anything, the drastic increase in e-delivery-bikes is prompting discussions to clamp down on this.
