Yup, we're all hero's until it happens too us. I have a mate that's an ex-springbok MMA fighter that was mugged outside Kayamnadi and offered up no resistance because the assailant was a deranged, drugged up lunatic on tik wielding a machete. Just one strike of that knife and your life could end. Is your bike worth a family without a father? You read the situation and you react appropriately. That's the wise thing to do if you're able to function properly in a fight or flight situation. Not everyone has that ability though because they're never been faced with it before.

Very true words.

I have had one attempted bike jacking ... VERY similar to that video. I was fortunate in that I read their body language ... they were not subtle in watching me and changing their approach, even though they were still "just pedestrians on the pavement" .... my spidey senses kicked in, I kept on moving at exactly the same speed (slowly up and incline), but dropped a gear or two and switched the Giant to full boost .... that instant they stepped off the pavement I stood on the pedals and shot forward like only an ebike can do in full boost.  By the time I got to them I was at 32km/h and heading straight towards them .... they jumped out of the way.

Hindsight ... VERY risky and could have gone wrong in so many ways !!  Then again, are we suppose to U-turn each time we saw "pedestrians" ....

Two years later, and I am still not comfortable with "idle pedestrians" .... always on the alert for that last second jump or bump .... frankly  p1553s me off that we have to be in this super alert mode while on what is supposed to be a relaxing ride .....

I'm just frustrated at the fact that we are in this position. And seeing inaction (at face value) is frustrating. More common sense prevails in comments by others about the reason for inaction, and I digress, their point is valid.

It just gets highly agitating when it's so close to home I can ride to the scene in maybe 3 - 5 minutes.

Mates of mine are doing daily walks in the same area and now they're afraid of doing that. And this is my gripe with allowing these buckets of excrement pretending to be human to do so they please.

Now I'm contemplating the purchase of a Pew Pew device because of this.

Why even bother fighting. Most of our bikes are insured. I will hand it over. A bike I can get back, not my life.

Disagree ☝️

My guess is that only 30-40% of bikes out there are in fact insured against theft or bike-jacking outside their place of residence. I stand to be corrected. The cost of insurance on bikes is simply outrageous.

What I am trying to say is that most people stare substantial financial loss in the eyes when their bikes are taken, hence the initial notion to fight back.

I could be wrong

Just take it and go

I for one would celebrate a new bike day

@thejoshswin can you please update the group on a likely another attack, 10-odd days ago, same area, and someone you knew…

It will help reinforce just how ‘bad/ regular’ the situation on that part is, and FURTHER forewarn others.

Cheers

Rode past. Taxi tried to pass 3 cyclists on blind-ish corner and drove straight into a bunch on the other side of the road.

no respect for rules of the road

no respect for human lives.

the state or our roads, drivers, phone usage of drivers etc just makes cycling outdoors too risky. So sad
