  1. 1. Are you finding it increasingly difficult to sell things on the classifieds?

My BIGGEST gripe with the community is the trend where people half-heartedly commit because they are either undecided or waiting on another offer to be confirmed. typically it is the first responder too.

In my case I almost lost a sure sale by the 2nd responder because said first person called on the morning of collection to say he bought his friends fork.

In my case I have learnt my lesson, cash talks, talk walks!!!!!

Just sold an indoor trainer to a really nice cycling couple. Transaction was pleasant with a bit of bike talk in between.

Gives one a fresh belief that there are still good and honest people out there willing to trade on HUB land!

On other sites I've used (mostly local) - it's a requirement to submit feedback - if you don't, you get a warning, then a ban (a week I think) and then another ban (a week again) and then a permo ban.

People don't want their accounts banned because if their iTrader ratings are low, people dont deal with them.

The point is to create a community of trusted buyers and sellers.

I think 90% of us do it as soon as the item arrives etc.

That is the second hand market. People buy second hand and from the Hub to get bargains.

You will always get people who will lowball you. They are trying to score a bargain. It's the nature of selling anything used.

Sold my Trek EX 5 via the classifieds.

Priced it right, at I thought so ... bit over 50% of the new price, and way less than 50% of what I put into it ....

Couple of scammer replies ...

Then one hubber LOW balled us.  And darned if he would accept no for an answer.  Think he came back 4 or 5 times with the same low ball offer ....  Was funny how is "reason" for the low ball was that it is a "bad bike", but he really wanted it ...

Took a long while, but sold it close to the asking price.

worth noting we had a couple of serious enquiries, but the small frame size excluded a number of buyers.

TBH you might sell them if they were more expensive. Strange call but if something is too cheap then people get spooked. There is always this sense of paranoia around scammers on the hub and mix that with Oakleys (which have the be one of the most copied manufacturers about) and you'll get people asking. I wouldn't get offended about that, answer them honestly, let them know and they should sell. Lowballers are part of the deal unfortunately you get the most brazen and incredible stories wanting 50% off. I simply say 'the price is good so that's what it is. If I'd wanted to give 50% off I'd have increased the price by that'.

Personally I've never had any issues selling kit quickly. I look after my stuff, sell at a good price and am upfront about issues.

you go get them tiger

But it's not Friday

Matt and the boys have good policies in place we all need to stick to them all about ethics

I lowball myself and then the buyer offers me more, but i sell cos i am i no need for it, and dont believe in giving away things. (not even charities)

I was wondering if people get any sales on used sunglasses. That is like the absolute last item I would buy 2nd hand, right after clothing and a used chain.

Some items will just generate much more interest and other items will only attract low-ballers and scammers.

There is something to say for not putting your item in for too low a price, allot of things sell at a high price just for the buyer to say and feel that he has something expensive, like a Dura-Ace crank.

HOWEVER... in the same breath I also think guys tend to be expecting way too much for used cycling equipment, especially in the current economic climate where there is allot of uncertainty and companies are struggling.

Try and read the response rate and the type of responses you get to figure out whether you are pricing it too high or low.

And please don't expect to offset 70% of your new item's cost by the selling of your old stuff. As a buyer I would then rather pay the 30% more to buy myself the new one you have your eye on....
