3rd time unlucky mate. I had a bike that broke twice in exactly the same spot. I had no issue getting a frame replaced from the company but after the second time I just thought sod it. It's cost me additional time time and money and It's bound to happen in the same spot again so I claimed on my insurance. Chalk it up to bad luck. If it was me they could shove that 4th frame anyway! Although sitting on the top tube is a bit dodge!?

So, obviously I’m not anything approaching pro status on a bike.... but I have to ask; Am I the only one wondering how you don’t end up with your testicles in your throat when sitting on the top tube and going through a pothole at > 40km/h? Or do you guys have a special gift to position and dangle one on each side of the tube?

Hmmm, so you have 3 identical breakages, but they choose to apply their warranty policy differently on the last one? The fact that you admitted anything is incidental, since they never asked in any of the previous 2 claims. Their assessment and application of the policy is not consistent (which you can prove). I would push them from a legal point of view.

I certainly wouldn’t “push them from a legal point of view”. If they push back, they could claim the cost of all of the replacement frames from the OP (based on the OP’s material non-disclosure). That would be the more likely legal outcome IMHO.

The fact that they’ve bent over backwards to accommodate the OP cannot be held against them in these circumstances.

As for me, I’d still love a Canyon frame. But then I don’t sit on the top tube.

Even Dan Martin said during the tour that the professionals should be prohibited from sitting on the top tube (on the basis that it’s dangerous and sets a bad example).

Can’t say,

Mine hangs just above the down tube.

If we were meant to sit on the top tube they would put a saddle there!

At 86kg you are also not your typical average burger-starved euro-pro, and besides this there is an element of risk to hitting bumps at high speed while sitting on your top tube, and unfortunately you have found out the expensive way.

I don't blame the manufacturer for not replacing a third frame and I also don't consider this to be a product weakness or design flaw.

I also occasionally sit on my top tube as well and the worst that happened was nearly seeing my gat with a massive speed wobble, but my frame is fine, although I might just reconsider this practice in light of your experience.

Maybe the cracking top tube is a built in safety feature to tell you that descending on the top tube is INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS and stupid and kinda pointless unless you are trying to win the GC in a grand tour?

okay so maybe the OP doesn't deserve another Frame

but MAYBE canyon could look at adding 70grams worth of carbon reinforcement to the toptube area as clearly it's failing much easier than expected

Agreed, especially on an aero frame. This is already a 7kg plus bike.

Lessons learned here, honesty won't go unpunished.

When it comes to warranty claims, be vague and provide as little information as possible. You know, like a little kid's explaining to his parents why he broke something; "I was just standing there and then when I looked it was broken".

Suppliers seem to have these "ahh it's because you did that" excuses to absolve themselves.

Not always hey... I believe it depends on the company model and/or integrity. I bought a dremel recently, I used it 25 minutes, 5-10 at a time, then it stopped turning on out of the blue. Explained this to the retailer and they reimbursed the full cost. Could've gotten nothing, could've struck gold.

I think op only received the two replacement frames because sitting on the top tube wasn't mentioned, but I'm duly impressed that 2 replacement frames were still sent!

Havent contacted them. I'm in JHB so I would have to send my bike to the Cape for that :/

Random idea OP, but is it at all possible to have the top tube rebuilt stronger? I know of 2 companies at least in JHB that do good work on carbon. I know it'll be slightly heavier, but if you take on upon yourself to have the top tube strengthened, you could perhaps use the Aeroad frame the way you want to and still benefit from every other reason that you bought that frame. What do you think?

Thanks! I have considered this. I do know a few people here that could help

Again I dont want a new frame nor was this thread created, in any way, to get another one for free. Before I sent the email, after breaking the 3rd frame I was ignorant to the fact that sitting on the top tube is not 'normal bike use'. And because this is in the warranty (somewhere) I agree 100% that, legally, I dont deserve a new frame. The point of this post was to make people aware of my experience and get a public opinion on the matter. If you dont sit on your top tube anymore then I guess I've achieved something?

imho I don't think you would have received 2 new frames from Pinarello, Biachi, Specialised..?

It is unfortunate you have been through 3 of them, but I can see the manufacturers perspective here. Their reponse was very polite - I've read it twice and I can't see how it is rude - and they offereed you a crash replacement for frame number 4. I would recommend them as a supplier at this point.

And if you need a repair done - carbonbikerepair in Northriding are a great bunch of guys.
