Wow, 1000 lumens is bright, like having your cars headlights on.

Just took a spin around the ‘hood to test.

Nothing quite like having motorists flick their brights at you cause you're blinding them from your bicycle.

A car headlight is around 700 lumens.

My quick google the other day revealed they can get up to 2000 lumens. But thats probably on brights and with both of them shining together. But then a car travels at a higher speed so it needs brighter lights.

Yeah I'm going to have to play with the level of the light, dont need to be blinding anyone but still want to be able to see.

There was a study conducted around 2011 where the level of brightness of bike lights impact on the eyes ability to capture optimum detail to create a meaningful picture for the brain to guide drivers or cyclists at night. The study determined that white light had a optimum effect around 700 to 900 lumen. Beyond that there was no discernable difference. Will see if I can find it.

yellow light had had the best effect and didn't require as much lumen (think it was 500 lumen) to achieve the same levels of detail and depth perception.

I also read something about lights a couple years back that said that white colored light worked better in clear conditions, while yellow light works better in rainy/misty/dusty conditions, at the time I read that it mentioned that cars in Europe would obviously have normal headlights while the fog lights were yellow, dont know if it is still like that, but it was interesting at the time

Ride was good last night. 

Only felt a little worried at 1 or 2 intersections where I needed to make sure no-one was going to skip the lights coming through from the side, but for the rest of the ride I never felt concerned.

 

what does take getting used to is adjusting the eyes from oncoming car lights to then see whats in front of you, especially in the faster sections where you need to look further ahead. But that skill will come.

 

Most cars gave me a wide berth when passing (theres always 1 or 2 idiots that dont though).

 

Tonight will be the second trip in the dark, it bring a new dimension to riding.

Went for a little 5k shuffle this morning. It was raining at when I woke up but stopped soon afterwards. Omg it was AMAZING! I ran with my ciovita bin bag on and pearl izimu sleeves and proper winter ski gloves. Legs warm up real quick when running so just in shorts.

 

It was amazing. We ran along the beach as it was getting light. Amazing. Amazing.

 

Did I mention that it was amazing?

you now there is a wind chill factor when the water in your bottle is colder when you get home than what it was when you left work.

Only felt cold on the bike for the first 5 minutes, once the body warmed up it was not bad at all.
