Garmin Down For Maintenance

Was thinking on my run this morning.... 4 days down and counting... That's massive

I wonder if it would be seen as a negative to crowd fund the ransom. For your contribution you get the equivalent in a voucher with a 50% or even 100% extra.. So if you donate $10... You get a $20 voucher. $50.. You get $100 voucher. That way they are still paying the ransom.. But distributing it over time as people will only be using the vouchers when they need them.. Or using them to upgrade their units. A million people contributing a tenner would sort the ransom out chop chop

If it were my decision, and knew the servers (or whatever is affected) could be restored without paying, I'd not pay. The fact that the flyGarmin service is back up and running means they've been able to do something without paying.

It it means they're off for a week, but everything is restored, then so be it. It doesn't stop me using the device, and from uploading to every other app manually. Just got back from my run and took less time to upload to Strava than it does through GC. All my other cloud storage apps are updated with all my workouts since Thursday, including Discovery... courtesy of the Apple Watch workout.

Yesterday I used my Lezyne, and Apple Watch and 735XT on both wrists.

Today I used my 735XT and the Apple Watch.

It's stupid to think I can't just use one device, but I've learnt not to rely on one brand. Thank goodness it's winter, and no-one saw me wearing a watch on both arms.

Yesterday’s ride

Jislaaik, that is called equipment redundancy, let alone data back up.

Frosty must really like his data.

Can't wait for the Garmins to flood the classifieds. Then again that won't happen. A few more days and this is all forgetting. Then people will need to go be miserable somewhere else again.

Oooops, my bad ....  :whistling:

Actually very calm, and truly interested to hear input from the other brands.  LOVE Frosty's thread about the Lyzene, especially as it looks at the various aspects of ownership, ie

- price

- software\app

- routes

- on- vs off-line use

- functionality in setting it up

- functionality while using it

- last, but not least, loading up rides.

Would really be nice to see a proper comparison between:

- Garmin

- Wahoo

- Lyzene

- Polar

- ?

been getting low battery messages with my 520 on a few longer days .... as much as I like the Garmin, I am not married to the brand ....

Back to this thread - this current issue most probably wont impact my decision of my next unit.

I picked up a Stages M50 Dash when my Garmin bombed last year. It's a bit of a mind bender to figure out how to get it configured and the Stages manua needs a glossary of terms to be of any use. Once I wrapped my head around it I found it to be a really good training tool.

Key issue........can;'t claim  Discovery point so still need a fit bit or some other fitness tracker that Discovery accepts. If not for Discovery I'd have ditched Garmin long ago.

The easiest workaround is a fitness tracker and then head unit that works best for you.

I fact , I may just spring for the one of the Apple packages Vodacom is offering. Kill two birds with one stone.

As others have said, once they fixed the issue everybody will carry on and back to normal. Doubt those who already on garmin will ditch it.

As a triathlete, cyclist and runner the integration of other systems and software either directly or via garmin iq is far better than any of the others devices out there, to their watches and head units.

Ones I exclusively use

-Trainingpeaks workout builder and structured workouts direct sync to garmin calender and hence to you device.

-Best bike split integration

-Stryd integration

If wahoo did a watch, I would perhaps consider that as a whole package across devices.

Polar have tried and cannot give me what I need.

Leyzene, fine for cycling even with limited integration.

Garmin as a whole hierachy for multisports is far ahead of any of the alternatives.

As for the data breech, my info is freely available across many platforms from garmin, trainingpeaks, WKO5, Strava, Runkeeper so I accept at somme point it to be hacked from any of these platforms

I wont be changing from garmin anytime soon, it does what it says on the tin and provides the best option

Seems some impressive IT knowledge on this thread . To those who know what they’re talking about , what will be the effect once the platform is back up and 200 million device stored activities try upload at the same time ?

Nothing you will ever hear about. Once things are stable they will probably scale up their environments for the first few days until they wave subsides, but realistically even if millions of users sync at the exact same moment at their current scaling it is unlikely to be a problem.

Strava will probably get hit harder as unlike garmin who simply needs to receive and file the data, maybe do some math for the averages.

Strava on the other hand needs to process and analyze it first. They are likely to get hit harder than Garmin on that one. The segment calculations are going to smack them for a solid 6. I would recon then need to prepare more for garmin a recovery than garmin does.

Also remember, that even if some people have done it manually, Garmin is still going to push everyone of those files over again, strava will reject most of them because of duplicate IDs.

I am guessing on the die hard kom seekers have gone through the trouble of uploading manually so I recon a serious majority of users are not bothered and just waiting it out.

Longer term what we could see is the app becoming less reliant on the server for syncing, as honestly it is silly that the app on your phone is also now utterly useless because of this. It should still be able to sync off your watch as well as provide most of your stats and basic functionality in a disconnected state.

100% agree.

My phone app went from simply not logging in to straight out crashing, all because the server is offline, doesn’t make sense.

I was a Wahoo user but switched to a Garmin Edge 530 after a great experience with an old, used, beat-up Fenix 3. Also I felt Wahoo wasn't/isn't innovating (particularly with the Roam, where they dispatched the device with a poor quality mount, a colour display who's colour functionality they barely used, the display was smaller than the marketing and various bugs were introduced with firmware updates (aka regressions)). I still love the Bolt though.

I think Garmin should really be a little more open with their users/clients. It's obvious something has gone badly wrong, they should just be open about it.

I really hope they don't pay the ransom. If they lose that data, it's bad, but it'd be far worse if they gave money to criminals. This is also a good lesson to us all to take ownership of our data by demanding the ability to export and backup our stuff. This is one area where the Wahoos really excel: you can upload directly to Dropbox as part of your normal sync. The Wahoo live track functionality is also really good, that's probably the biggest thing I miss. Maybe I should just go back to a Bolt.

My Edge 530 has been decent... although I had to load on beta firmware to use my radar properly (and I got it after it had been on the market for several months).
