Got dropped of near the venue. Had a nice get together with my clubbies . We all started in F. Got dropped by my pals almost immediately after the start. Few of us found a nice group all the way to Kayalami. There I had to make a pitstop . Then a  few kms further I stopped to greet my sister .

Found my pal on top of Jan Smuts. Rode past my old school where I started standard six fifty years ago. From there my mate pulled me home all the way in  3.21. My club mates had absolutely no remorse for dropping me, but made it up with boerie rolls and beers.

The stadium is awesome. From my side the event was well organised. As far as the route goes, I think the logistics and effort of closing off numerous crossings outweighs the scenery that may be gained.

I had a nice day.

Mates and a cycling race LOL

This was about number 18 for me. 1st in 1998 on a MTB with slicks, progressed to race bike , then race tandem with daughters then back to Mtb. Took a four year break when we lived in Witbank.

I doubt that there are any scenic routes in Jhb to compare with CTCT but I have enjoyed seeing parts of the city I might not otherwise get to see , plus the vibe is always good .

I have never had any issues with the organizational side of the event ( I make a point of reading and understanding the pre race instructions )and unlike others enjoy going to the Expo to get my number and bump into friends.

So far only one puncture (in 1998) and no other mishaps .

This was my first 947 challenge and I really enjoyed it. I thought that FNB Stadium was perfect, easy to access (as long as you were aware of what roads were closed and how to get around), lots of parking (I arrived at 08:00, and I got a parking just next to the start).

I thought the route was challenging, but fun. I see how some people were complaining that it does not show off Joburg…well I don’t fully understand that as what route would show off Joburg? We started at FNB Stadium, got to see a bit of Soweto, rode past some of Joburgs iconic gold mine dumps, went through a little bit of an industrial area along main reef road, through town, both there and back, past Melrose, Rosebank, Hyde Park, Monte Casino, a lap around Kyalami, through some of the Joburgs suburbs, with Santas lane being wonderfully decorated, past the zoo…..I just don’t see how that does not show off Joburg?

That climb up Jan Smuts by the zoo was for me the toughest climb (thank goodness it was cool weather, otherwise it would have been even tougher), was a real grind up there. Overall I thought it was a fantastic day out, lots of support from spectators, great vibes from everyone, and overall just well organised.

Those complaining that the route does not 'show off Joburg' must be from the East? And to that I say THERE IS NOTHING TO SHOW OFF HERE :D

For me the entire day ran smoothly as well, although I'm not referring to my legs or my riding. Entry into FNB Stadium was a lot easier than Riversands for me, coming from the East and taking the Soweto Highway offramp I flowed straight into Silver Parking a short distance from the start. Those coming from the North will probably have a different outlook, seemed like a lot of congestion coming in from that side.

Agree with Jan Smuts, only those who've been up there for that entire length on two self-propelled wheels know. More than one person on the way up complained that 'this is worse than the Argus!'

This was no 17 for me started out when it was still Kyalami. The new location is great, it was always a mission the few years to get into Riversands even if you were early (5am). This time around it was smooth, took the Rand Show offramp as it for me was the best access for the silver parking(could've taken the N17). There were a few cars in front of us and that was it.

The route was nice...from the word go the pace was hectic...tried to hang on to a few bunches but got dropped. Found a bunch just before getting on the M2 and stayed with them untill Kyalami where I got dropped again. From here on it was a solo effort, though the climb on main road would be difficult but it was not that bad. The long climb in Douglasdale was hectic(forgot about this nasty climb) and I knew the climb on Jan Smuts would be brutal. The last stretch solo on the highway to finish in the wind was a challenge, but all in all a good day out.

Was my first ever road race started @ 8:20 finished in 2h.48min what a race what a vibe , I must have passed over 2000 people , was a solo effort all the way to the finish. It was by far the best race I have ever attended, loved the hills and landmarks, and supporters all over the show . My only gripe was the stingy race pack, the fact that I had to pick up the race pack on a separate day , is a real pain in the butt especially if you coming from Mpumalanga!! They should at least offer delivery of the race pack , and the vaccination thing nearly had me not attending, as I rushed to get the second vacation before the 7 day cut off. But the race itself was amazing and will definitely be back next year this time starting with much faster riders????????????

that an insane time for a solo effort. e-bike perhaps ?

edit

your bike does not look like an obvious e-bike (to me), thats an insane time bud.

I don't follow her on Social Media, but my Wife does and she said that Cherise Willeit wrote a very nice piece saying she felt really sorry for Emma - but she also said the bunch was confident they would have caught her if she didn't have the extra 2mins.

Cherise provides some level headed rationale, here’s her full post: https://www.facebook.com/646915139/posts/10159600116785140/?d=n

Sad how this post seems to be more about the ladies ride and Emma than about the actual race.

Can we talk about the ride from the view of the average person and what was good and what wasn't good.

I'm sure the organizers want feedback.

I think soccer city as a venue is a winner.

We had our informal support station setup at the room Jan Smuts again.

Decide to file a small edit of the day in pictures, luckily BN ran it: https://bikenetwork.co.za/947-ride-joburg-photo-story/ ... please feel free to share.

Whaaattt?

but you get "high quality white 947 Ride Joburg official t-shirt to the value of R290."  :)

I get inflation and decreased numbers pushing up the costs, but sheesh, soo to be paying R1000 for a 1 day bike race.

Give me the option of an entry without the shirt, please.
