The crowds are out in their thousands (still not a gees level like SA/CPT) but they came out. Bands , drums, bagpipes all kinds of along the road. So cool! There was quite a few South Africa's out there on the route too, and that helped keep me smiling on the outside. On the inside i was crying Now i don't run (as my brother puts it I'm almost anti running) so was relying on my cycling fitness and some of the training i did i was hoping to do 4:30. From the gun i made sure i kept my head and maintained my pace (6:20min/km). I managed to come home official time 4:29:38 last 800m i ran 5:33min/km to make in time. My nutrition was always going to be a concern packed in only 2 fast bars as i forgot the rest at home, luckily one of my wifes guests offered me 2 pvm bars which i kept on me, I last tried gels about 10 years ago and couldn't stomach it around 15kms to go i grab 2 muarten gels at the table and with some water got one in at 10km to go and 5km to go... Can't say it helped or didn't i survived. ...glad that's done and my 1st marathon done. I'm still too sore whether or not I'll do another. Still walking like a penguin. ... lessons learnt is part of the reason i came was to help with logistics etc with my wife's company, i walked around 10kms Thursday 15kms Friday and 22km Saturday. I should of probably spent less time on my legs and feet. They were very heavy during the race... Well done 👍 Meezo 1

I got a TOM entry about a month before through subs, and plenty were available. The door is definitely not closed, complete a qualifying marathon and you'll be just fine. I was not even aware entries were open. After 3 years of running the thing you’d think I’d at least get an email notifying me that entries are open. It doesn’t surprise me though. Looks like they don’t know what they’re doing there. I wont fight it. If an opportunity comes I’ll take it but if not I’ll run something else

Rowl Posted October 8 Posted October 8 (edited) So I entered the lottery (a friend told me it was on) and got an entry. I ran the Madibaz 21km in Sept, but apart from that have zero anything else. I entered as prep for MUT 45 and hope to get cracking soon (but first a lazy DC effort). Furthest I've run before was the OMTOM 24km trail some years ago. Wish me luck. Thanks, I see Shebeen said the same thing - I'm aiming for comrades so will push through with training regardless. So many said subs sell out before they even had a chance to land but the little flame of hope is growing stronger! I fully understand the ballot system since the demand is just insane.
IceCreamMan Posted October 8 Posted October 8 Back in February I got struck down with serious plantar fasciitis issues in left foot. For pretty much 6 months I was laid up from running and focussed on cycling. I might have run a total of 10 kms in those 6 months. Mid August I tentatively started running again albeit slow and with a bit of pain. No pain no gain eh. Used all sorts of foot massage devices including a vibrating one, balms, snake oil, voltarol 2.32 %, old wives and witches concoctions, special expensive socks and spent about 20 minutes a day massaging my foot. slowly coming right, getting a bit of running mojo back. Completed 2 half marathons and I cherish those medals. Looking optimistic so feeling good. Missed running and it affected my mental health not being able to run. Not 100 percent, still a bit of pain while running and it increases after I have finished running but it’s getting better. don’t mean to bore you all, but the point being sometimes injuries just need a whole lot of time and preventative measures to overcome. And ultimately my injury was because I was pushing to hard and not resting sufficiently, the body is clever that way and being nigh on 60 does not help. ChrisF, Rowl, Vallende Vaandel and 1 other 4

Also been out of running for a few months due to non running related knee injury. Lots of physio exercises (physios can conjure up an unlimited amount of weird exercises that you never heard of until physio 😂) and yesterday day I managed a 4km walk / run on the treadmill with no knee pain. I almost missed it too but the club whatsapp group was full of posts - I got in. However, like all things that don't weigh up the supply and demand variables, many people enter before they even know they are actually going to run. *plenty will not even get past the point of paying for the entry by end of november *plenty will not do a qualifying marathon *plenty will have this thing called life getting in the way The door is not shut! I had a little fight with CT marathon about them closing subs miles ahead of the event. I suppose if you build a successful event you might think you have earned the right to be a chop about it. I've since gone one size up in all my running shoes. IceCreamMan 1

I've since gone one size up in all my running shoes. same for me, I've got big/ wide feet, always struggled to find a suitable size and mostly ran with shoes too small/ tight. finally I found decent wide shoes - the biggest improvement in comfort and staying injury free for me, especially for ultras where feet get hot and swell even bigger IceCreamMan and ScottCM 2
