Put him on the back of a tandem. 2016(last proper length race) my toppie was 60 and we did a 2h57m.

My dad is turning 71 in March.

Before he met my mom he was about to turn pro, in those days Malcolm Lange was riding under 16s and actually trained with my dad a few times.

Then he gave it all up.

When I was around 16 I bought my first proper bike, an Alpina. We started training for the Argus. Back the Lido Hotel was the place to train, so we would ride the 20km to the hotel, do a route out there and then ride back. I then broke my arm and gave up the training. (stupid me)

My dad has been doing some 10-20km rides on his own, is always active so fairly fit for a 70 y/o. Last year when it was to late it dawned on me, I should have got him to enter because it was the 40th and it would have been nice to ride with him. When it was canceled I grabbed the opportunity, phoned him up right away and said he has 1 year to start training.

We have been riding together a few times in preparation for next month, I will be starting at the back with him and we will do our first ever Argus together. His aim is to do it under 5 hours, given his strength on the bike I'm thinking we'll do closer to 4:30.

The only way I can have a better Argus after this would be when one of my daughters ride with me.

The wind seems to be in full training now - forget 3 days on and 1 day off, it's more like 1 week on and 1 day off. We can only hope bye the day its so over trained it can't muster up even a breeze!

Killarney tonight and a rest day for the wind - this does not often happen! Maybe the rain is coming.

My dad is turning 71 in March...............

Hi Ouzou

Just enjoy every moment of it.

I've done a few like that with my father and it will for ever be special. On 2 occasions the 3 generations, him, myself and my 2 boys did it together and it was simply magic. The old DJR is now 80 and this years one will be his last, he says, so I'm riding it with him again. He's a strong 80 and rides a bit like a bulldozer, slow but sure and is aiming for about 5 hours. He doesn't like the big bunches, so I'll be his domestique, and if the wind blows, I'll be upfront all the way. If it's hot, I'll go fetch the water. All the time I'll be shepherding him and blocking the crazy idiots from coming near him. They better not cancel it, but even if they do, we have already decided that we will ride it anyway! We'll just call it the Tour de DJR!

thats my plan too.

I've done it more than enough times on my own that I really dont care about time anymore, its about the time we spend together.

Would be a great idea, but not sure how keen he would be. . . Much happier to suffer on his own than to ask for help haha

Despite their best efforts to be off the grid, a lot of people are just not getting their message or understand their plans, hate to say this but I predict the race will not go ahead, there's just too much politico-social pressure building up and if it does go ahead, there's bound to be external "interference" on the day.

I hope I'm wrong...
