  1. 1. Are you finding it increasingly difficult to sell things on the classifieds?

    • I sell things quickly and easily - it seems people have money

    • I find it rather difficult to sell things - I struggle to sell and get low ball offers

Guess it depends on what the original value was. If it was a R100k+ Item and relatively new Id probably tell you to get bent too then lol. Take a zero off...same as offering someone 7k for a 8.5k fork or whatever that cost around 10-12k originally i guess.

But its still a reasonable offer, isn't it? No need to be so rude.

The seller need only consider the offer for a bit, and decline (politely if possible).

I offered a dude R70k for a R85k item yesterday, he told me to stick it

Did you attempt to view the bike before making an offer?

Is the bike worth R85k and your offer is based around the cash you have available, or is it only worth R70k and that's why you offered that amount.

I think the communication around the offer is important for this one.

If it was just a reply to the ad saying "I will give you R70K" I would have probably responded the same. If it was a discussion then we could have chatted further.

Personally, it annoys me when people make "lowball" offers without even making an effort to view or even chat about the condition, age, etc. of the item.

By lowball I am referring to a more than 20% lower price you offered the gentleman.......

Just a Q, so if the guy comes over, looks at it or asks about the condition online / message then does that make the same lowball offer okay?

I'd probably accept that.

I don't own any bikes worth 85k but I would accept the 7k for and 8.5k 2nd hand fork.

2nd hand goods are only 'worth' what someone is willing to pay. That guy is probably going to sit with that 85k bike until it's old tech and only 'worth' 60 anyway

yes....but why i also said to consider what the original price was. if it is a 2018/19 R120k+ bike for instance....70k would be considered a low ball offer if the seller wanted 85k for that bike. same...if it were a 2018/19 fork or something that retails for 20k ish and the seller was willing to let it go for 8500 and someone offered 7k? thats all i'm saying. The new price in this case is a factor.

it happens. Ive listed newish things knowing full well i could probably ask more but was selling at about 50% because whatever...then someone sees that - thinking that "this guys obviously doesn't want it due to the low asking price so ill just low ball him even further and he'll probably take it"

nope.

edit: but yes. i think the market for things in that range is tiny compared to the rest and that means you either have to cut your losses when you want to move it or keep it and be happy with what you obviously wasted your money on originally lol.

same with certain car brands and second hand values.

It's harder to just use the classifieds with the new update, and the turnover of new ads seems to have taken a massive dive at the same time...

totally with you on this. I used to like window browsing in there due to the ease and flow of it all...now is just a chore. my honest opinion is that they will lose some of the spontaneous/impulse buys because of this.

Like my post said, it all depends on how the lowball offer is made, the context.

If the bike is being viewed and it is in prestine condition but you feel the bike is overpriced then that can be discussed, but if it is prestine and you only have the lower amount discuss it that way. A compromise on spec could be made possibly.

Same with an online offer, "Hi, I am interested in the bike but only have Rxxx could we still look at discussing a deal" as opposed to "Cool bike, I can offer you Rxxx".

Thanks, I just wanted to see what the motivation was between the two different approaches were as at the end of the day it's the same offer we're theoretically talking about but it's more in the approach to you as a seller that would make all the difference.

I work on the assumption that whatever I'm selling is worth half its original value by default. Even if it has (by my account) seen relatively little use.

The second hand bicycle (whether a whole bike or its individual components) market is rarely a place to recoup or make money. From my experience, the second hand market is a place to try score a bargain (myself included in this expectation).

If you want a higher price that is closer to original market value, expect to sit with the item for a while.

I'm interested to hear what gives you this perception? Looking at the data we're certainly not seeing this. So far this week 990 new ads have been posted.

Monday saw 360 new ads posted, that's the highest daily number of ads in the last 30 days.

Tuesday and Wednesday saw 267 and 246 new ads posted, beating our 30 day daily average of 230 new ads.

We're working on a few things to address some of the common navigation complaints.

Would also be interesting to see the figures regarding how many ads were purchased this year to promote ads

(Highlighted ads, Homepage Ads and/or Top Ads)

I like the new site. There will obviously be some teething issues but it works. The filters on some just run 'backwards' to the old site, but you get there in the same number of clicks.

Don't be scared of change guys... See it as an early holiday.

must be the same guys that hung onto 26'ers and Crossmarks well past their sell by dates :P

I bought two items about two weeks ago (a bike and wheelset)

and two more items this week (Polar watch and saddle).

I'm having no problems using the new layout/interface - there were a few teething problems.

I've still got to figure a few things out but that will come in time (just like a new girlfriend)!

Times are tough and money is tight but on all the above items I haggled and got a very good price.

The sellers seemed happy to let them go at the agreed prices.

Agreed that if you hold on to old technology goods for too long, the demand drops steeply!

BikeHub rocks...keep up the good work!

Obviously it works, we’re here using it. How good it works is questionable. Change for the sake of change?

Ill use the example again...windows 8 was a massive failure for a reason and it had nothing to do with the workings of windows itself...it was a UX/UI design issue.

It works and the potential is there obviously...it just doesn't feel well executed and is not well optimized.

cant post it in the admin thread so ill do it here...classic case of "here's a widget...lets use the widget...even though it ads absolutely nothing....except for drunk hubbers who aim for the sidebar but hit the ribbon instead, same function....just page clutter. =  bad design
