Well my new standard 50km route is out of Obz onto main road - up past SACS and Forries - down paradise road (I'm 80m outside my 5k at this point) back into Claremont, past Newlands cricket ground onto Campground to smash it to Old Church street where I turn right and then up Roodebloem, down through Walmer Estate, District 6, back along main road and up mountain road into Walmer estate again and down Roodebloem, Salt River, Voortrekker Road, Pinelands, Jan Smuts past Langa and then Sportsman's Rondebosch, out through Newlands again, Western Province cricket club, and back to Obz - 50km and about 500m ascent.

Not too many other zombies. If I feel nervous about the full Jan Smuts loop, I can smash straight down Forest drive.

Common loops - not a chance.

i get so bored i forget what loop i already did...you can do only so many laps around Rondebosch Commons...

The green belts are fine like 6am...but it gets even more tedious when you have to navigate walkers and dogs 3/4/5 abreast...in both the cycle lane and sidewalk. And they get annoyed when you hit them with a bell or 1000 lumens   ^_^

I seriously envy the people able to hit the open roads in the northern suburbs. Even though the road network is huge when you live in town...the logistics that go with it make it VERY tedious navigating everyone and everything within 5km and still feel like you are having fun.

Are people riding to milnerton's side from obz in early mornings?? or even CBD (recreationally i mean).

I see you can just about squeeze in up to Lagoon beach Milnerton or Bree street in Town within the 5km radius from OBZ/Woodstock. But then theres the question of that woodstock cycle lane again...or just using the hi-way in the dark, or albert/strand/victoria and risk getting jumped under the n2. (is the military roadblock still in strand at the n2?)

Thought ill check for a group going that side this morning but I literally passed 2 bicycles...and both were commuters.

anyway...off to go p1ss of some cyclists on the green belt with my dogs

I have noticed a progressive cramp sensation on my larynx over the last week. I am sure it has to do with the strain of breathing through a buff. My chest also feels miffed at me, so I skipped on riding yesterday and today, and will see how it feels tomorrow. At my age I need to start thinking if a hard effort is worth the risk of a possible coronary event induced by laboured breathing.

It sounds like the Anatomic mask is the way to go, as I am not convinced by buff breathing. When going uphill with the buff on, my HR sometimes peaks at about 185 bpm, this after having a tough time of it to get to 170 bpm with no buff prior to the lockdown debacle.

It's either the buff, or I'm seriously unfit, which I doubt.

I’m looking forward to trying the Anatomic mask, all my others are poef for running but the buff works okay for rides but, it is not great...

Look, just to be perfectly clear: you are putting a flow restrictor on your face, just be aware of that fact and don't try to run your PBs now.

Just dial that intensity back a smidge, maybe compensate the drop in intensity with a longer duration or some additional work before or after the workout.

These aren't normal times, we are making the best of an overall crap situation.

Hahaha! I hear you. I sweat a lot as is when I run my buff does a great job of collecting it.

Which model is being used by cyclists ?

3 layer ?

4 layer ?

How easy is it to move the mask to drink water ? I typically drink water when alone a stop or robot, very easy with the buff. Even possible while riding

EDIT . thank you Swift& Aero

I dunno, I haven't managed to get some as yet. I have been too busy with graft to think about anything else much. I am hoping they're as good as Swift seems to say they are. I am well and truly over my buff, but it's all I have, or it's those ghastly blue medical masks my wife managed to source. I can only imagine they are going to be worse still.

Tell me about it!

My buff/mask/cap... whatever is on my head, is soaked after a good run workout.

Had a bit of a reality check this morning .....

Drove to the office at 5:15.  Yet there were people out walking .... then it dawned on me.  These were not residents out for a stroll .... these were the workers at the local shop and garage on the way to work.

Some of us are throwing their toys out the cot, how dare government suggest we should exercise at such an early hour ..... for so many in this country their reality is that they are walking many kilometers in the pitch dark to get to work.

I do a few loops around the yard hitting the makeshift ramp and I'm dripping in sweat.

Have always sweated a lot, but find now that I'm fitter I sweat more. Apparently its a thing, as you get fitter the body recognises that there is work coming and opens those sweat glands early to pre-empt it.

I stop and wring it out when I get to a quite spot. Today was nice with the chilly breeze.

my knees have been feeling rather sore over the last couple of days, plus did not sleep well last night, so took a gentle cruise over my 20km Giro d'hood loop.

for drinking masks are crap. The buff is better, easier to work with.

haha...this weekend found myself next to a coffee stand/station while out buying food for the dogs...and obviously got a pro brew for the first time in 45 days or whanot....just to realise i was incapable of drinking it in public because of the stupid mask....
