This hobby should come with a Warning label

I am sure we have many hubbers like me.....and we need to form some sort of support group ( the hub aint the support group as it fuels the addiction more   )

I am ALWAYS looking at buying something new (or new to me) for this hobby - bike, parts, accesories or anything related to this hobby.

Iv purchased new cars, never needed to add or buy so many accesories, same when I had motorbikes. I use to keep Marine fish (nemo's) and that had potential to buy endless fish and accesories etc - yet I wasnt that addicted to searching and looking for new things to buy as I am with MTB'ing. I been running for years, yet ocntent with one pair of runners a year and only changed out watches once every 3 years or so.

I even enjoy changing up my kids bikes or adding better components, so its not only to buy things for me  :whistling:

I enjoy my bike and not into chasing strava times or entering competition etc , i just love getting outdoors with any bike.

Do any of you folks also have this obsession, always looking to get something new , be it a new water bottle to new carbon rims or adding more bikes to the selection.

If my wife only knew how much i actually spend on this hobby

The hub support group is the classifieds section!

The trick is that you should be spending more time and money ejoying your bike, rather than spending it on your bike. I think that s where most people lose the plot.

sensible upgrades are all good and well, but if its only to ensure you have the most drool worthy bike in the bike stand outside the local coffee shop, whats the point.

If you are going to spend 10x the national min wage a year on bikes, make sure you spend at least half of it going to amazing places to ride your bike. I personally would rather spend R40 - R50k on a decent bike thats going to last me three years or so before needed any real majpr parts replaced, and then spend R100k on travelling to riding locations. Long before I spend R150k on the bike itself.

But, yes, I do also have a problem, and spend most of my free time obsessing over something to do with bike, plan all my holidays around bikes, etc. I am pretty sure I drive my non riding mates mad - actaully, why do I even bother still having mates that dont ride

just built a new MTB.

I have an Excel sheet with the actual weights of each item on the bike (I also have one for the road bike)

I have plans for about R35k worth of upgrades to take the bike from a sub 11kg to sub 10kg - then it is REALLY gonna ride UP GRADES.

I am actually trying to pick up weight so the bike will HAVE TO lose it...

I'm also doing the spreadsheet thing .  I had my frame resprayed a few weeks back, ideal opportunity to weigh everything meticulously while its in pieces.

Every change I make get recorded with it's the weight change.  I need to draw the line at some point, maybe tomorrow ...

If your caravan happens to tour Europe following all the grand tours as well as visiting some world cup MTB events and bike parks - I am in. #LIFEGOALS

Funnily enough just last night we said we owe it to the world to follow the tours on Bianchis just so everyone doesn't forget about the brand, because Jumbo-Visma had dropped them.

(But then we saw our Aussie mates at Mitchelton have signed them up together with a new name so I suppose our 'sacrifice' is no longer needed... sadly)

At least there is no money for drugs. I have been riding for around 7 years and have had/built over 60 bikes with only a handful of new bikes. I soon realised that I keep changing everything so why buy a new bike if I am just going to change everything on it.

Currently I only have 2 bikes and a frame hanging while I play around with ideas for what direction I want to go with it.

Tell that to the A bunch..

Bought my Trance 29 in Feb 2019. So far the only stock bits left are the brake calipers, rims, cassette and derailleur. I've been more restrained with the Revolt, with only rear derailleur, handle bar, bar tape, wheels, stem and a saddle being changed

Welcome brutha

admin must have a 10minute limit per day for this disorder

Just wait till you start collecting Vintage Steel, then the addiction really hits hard. At the moment you’re still dabbling in dagga, crack cocaine awaits you around the corner and it’s carrying a really big stick.

Already looked at some steel frames- but im not dipping my hand into that pond just yet......

this i fully agree with, i made a mental note that I need to spend alot more time riding and enjoying the outdoors than seeing " what next"

I capped myself at not paying more than R50k on a bike, for now atleast as that to me doesnt make sense to spend that much when I know in few years i need to buy my kids cars etc,

however a gravel bike is very tempting tho, too tempting

Is there such a thing as a window shopping addiction? It helps when you can't afford all the new gear

Window shopping is playing with fire, you will take that chance and get burnt

Trust me i dont have tons of disposable income, but i have I have learnt how to sell off many items that I have just been hoarding around the house that inturn can fund this hobby.

so it has some plus side too

I have a problem with tools.

Just bought a Park derailleur hanger alignment tool. I doubt it will get used much. Same with buying their big torque wrench. Only place I’ve used it so far was on a crank bolt that needed 60nm

And then alllll the other tools. Specific sets for specific bolts for example.

It never ends.

So all you need now is a new frame, and you're set.
