When the Corona Pandemic struck the market, Canyon immediately felt the impact of disrupted supply chains, changing demand and skyrocketing logistic costs. In order to maintain our position as a rider-oriented company offering great value and service, Canyon regrets to announce the discontinuation of direct to consumer sales in South Africa as of 31 July.

that makes no sense. why shut down a market when there is little to no cost in keeping it open?

And why maintain a brand presence in a country in which the brand is unavailable ?

you know how many american stores flat out refuse to send stuff to SA, even with private courier. Just because of how slow/unreliable customs and what not is. Had it with boat parts last year. Just a plain no. Even with the most expensive trackable shipping option they refused.

Probably because there are too many things outside of your control making it impossible to deliver an acceptable service level to the customer.

On the Canyon Bike FB page, lots of complaints about lack of stock. quality of finished product and severe delays in receiving bikes (months after purchase).  Perhaps outlier regions like SA being not a large market is getting the chop as they cannot service it.  Keeping a presence with Erik (even if just in name only) I guess for existing owners and the odd few who decide to purchase anyway.

We'll ask Erik to confirm the details, but from our understanding Canyon are shutting down direct to consumer orders to SA however Canyon bikes will still be available to our market via Erik / Canyon Cafe. Even with consumer direct orders open to SA until now, Erik has been facilitating many of the orders for SA customers to streamline the customs process and will continue to do so going forward.

Realistically how many did they sell? 50? 100? Doubt it. They have to compete with the likes of Specialised in this country. Even the average non cyclists knows what a spez bike is because of the concept stores, and because everyones cousin's-dog-in-law has one. They had no chance imo.

and specialised you can actually go see and sit on the bike you want, try sizing (not wait months for shipment), and the price you see is the price you pay.

Sorry, I just never felt like Canyon was actually available in/to SA
