This was more or less where it happened.

Glad you're ok

Phone - maybe a blessing since they had what they wanted

Totally, counting my lucky stars. Having read about so many incidents and seen some horrific photos, I was lucky.

Literally as I passed Blue Jay/Timberlea (where I recall a similar incident took place), I was thinking to myself: "How? It's so open here and there's traffic, etc." As soon as I saw the 3 guys, I was like "Oh ****, trouble". Glad my head was up and I was at least aware of my surroundings. Wish I was going even faster...

Pisses me off that one of the cops, who overheard me giving my statement, said: "You saw a knife and slowed down?" And then walked off with a smirk on her face. 🤬

I just didn't have enough speed (or so I thought) and didn't want to risk a 50/50 chance to get past the first guy, with the fear of getting knocked off and being completely disabled and injured.

Tried my luck to turn around, but just wasn't quick enough so decided my life was worth more than my insured bike.

Watched the video - interesting view on things. I too was surprised at how much foliage was growing - deeply- into the yellow lane on Ou Kaaps - I - and a good few others - 'called it in' - and they ACTUALLY did cut back in 2 or 3 areas! I felt there was still a fair bit of windscreen glass about, but realize accidents are frequent!

Just now Googled top 10 most congested cities in the world, and, et Voila...!

According to recent reports, the top 10 most congested cities are Istanbul, New York City, Chicago, Mexico City, London, Paris, Jakarta, Los Angeles, Cape Town, and Brisbane. These cities lead the rankings due to significant traffic delays, with Istanbul topping the list with motorists losing an average of 105 hours per year to congestion.

This list is not accurate. Not a single Indian city? Anyone visited Bangkok or Manila? Cape Town has nothing on those cities. Bangalore traffic took me an hour to get to the office 10km from my hotel. I could have walked faster…

@michaelbiker I hear you. But then, the article Meezo posted, under WHY CT is so congested, fail to mention that we have a MASSIVE COASTLINE & a MOUNTAIN where zero roads can be built, unlike Jozi, which is pretty-much a hub & spokes type (wheel) configuration.

No matter - CT remains a HEAVILY congested city.

Many years ago, we left Paarden Eiland for home at 5pm, but had to go in to the City to get to Kloof Nek, then Hout Bay...

Traffic blocked MANY junctions EXITING the city, preventing our 'ingress'..

So we then went home at 4pm, to avoid the outbound rush/peak, whilst we were still inbound - BRILLIANT, much better...

Fast-forward 5 years, and it - the peak - is now where 5pm 'was', but at 4pm...!

Luckily, an Uber driver one evening showed us a MUCH 'cleaner' way to get to Houties, so best Uber money we spent! (Van was in for o/nite service...)

This is the main cause, huge sign at the intersection of Dock Road to the Waterfront and Buitengracht asking Motorists to not block the intersection. But happens all over Cape Town. Just station a couple of traffic cops there during peak hour, how hard can that be? 🙆🏼‍♂️

This just came up on my Instagram feed…..

Never ceases to amaze me how blown out of proportion this stuff gets. I guess our lizard brains are wired to look for threats and people and businesses will continue to exploit it. AI is going to make it impossible to determine what’s happening on the ground vs what is fake. My motto, use your common sense, stay off social platforms like instagram, facebook, TikTok etc - they are trained to feed you stupid sh*t like this - and go outside.

Don't kid yourself. You live in one of the most violent and dangerous countries in the world.

Depending on where you look SA ranks between #3 and #6 in the world for murder. We're also right up there when it comes to house robberies and car hijackings. And rape seems to be our national sport.

Add to that a totally ineffective and massively underfunded and under staffed police force and millions of un vetted foreigners and a political elite who blame all of the countries failings on a single minority ethnic group.

Oh and the armed response guy you entrust your life to when you press the panic button at 2am..... He earns 9k a month. He's not going to put his life on the line for you.

If you live in a leafy high end suburb with security cams or a walled off estate you are paying for the illusion of safety. Nothing more.
