Rode past. Taxi tried to pass 3 cyclists on blind-ish corner and drove straight into a bunch on the other side of the road.

no respect for rules of the road

no respect for human lives.

the state or our roads, drivers, phone usage of drivers etc just makes cycling outdoors too risky. So sad

I assumed some sort of unnecessary overtaking maneuver ... but expected it to be another vehicle given that the taxi must have gone quite far over to put the oncoming cyclists at risk ... 🤔

Like many of us I cycle this road a lot. Just this week within the space of 20min cycling from Hout bay to camps bay, I witnessed a taxi undertaking a car coming down suikerbossie, then a few min later another blew through the red traffic light going about 90kmh at llandudno, and then I saw at least 2-3 others driving at around 100kmh overtaking into oncoming traffic, cutting corners etc 😭 it was honestly only a matter of time. And on the same ride I rode up to tafelberg road which is where all the cops were hanging out ticketing cars (I assume licence discs).

While I’m not excusing driving with expired license disc displayed on your car, given the apparent shortage of staffing, and known reckless behaviour on our roads (which I had just witnessed), it made me extremely disappointed that these resources weren’t being put to far better use with visible policing on the coast road. It is well known that taxis drive recklessly on this road (they were even banned a few years ago for a while).

I saw that comment. The tjop has left his phone number on a public post maybe someone that has bot 🤖 skills can spam him 🤔🫣

Friend request sent. I want to show him a picture.  I cannot share it. But I can show him. It might help him to understand the actual very real and very messy end result of road traffic incident.

I see someone posted a picture of us IN A CYCLING lane with the "Bloody cyclists" comment, I mean we ride all over the place, but that picture we were single file in a BIKE LANE.

So sorry about the poor cyclist and the life changing incident which was pointless from the taxi saving 45 seconds.

We drove back from the lake on Monday, we had an Audi overtake 8 cars and a truck on a blind rise and corner, there was no way he could see what was coming - he was just driving on a prayer and hope that there was no oncoming car. I mean, you are willing to risk your whole family...

The fact that this is a known stretch of road for dangerous driving  - taxis in particular as someone else on this thread noted, means that the authorities should be enforcing and impounding taxis on a regular basis on that route. They probably don't do it nearly often enough so as with all things taxi - reckless, illegal driving in yellow lanes, off route and such like largely goes unpunished. I've noticed an uptick in off route, running stop signs and yellow lane driving in my burb and work commute making me think the situation is getting worse not better...

We did the bare minimum of cycle tour training and dared only one ride along the Atlantic coast preferring to park in the south and ride into Cape Point to get the distance. The roads in CT are crazier than ever.

The Atlantic Side / Victoria Road is now a BUSY taxi route between Camps Bay and Hout Bay - please treat with extreme caution at all times of day and night.

On the other side of the mountain, taxis are now running through Bishopscourt - using Klaasens Road (previously safe) and Bishopscourt Drive/Canterbury Drive to get to Rhodes Drive, then over Constantia Nek and down to Hout Bay.

Southern Cross Drive (Constantia) is another taxi route, and downhill is regularly used to test the terminal velocity of a HIACE, despite blind corners and hidden entrances.

Be careful out there.

i travel daily by car and quite often longer distances.went down to mosselbay and pe 2 or 3 times the last month or two.apart from the speedcop sitting behind a bush manning his traffic camera i did not see one speedcop anywhere on the roads. my opinion is that this is just a money making exercise with nothing to do to keep the roads safer.

I'll try and keep this brief, because I have a lot to say.

For context I have lived in this area most of my life and have ridden that road since I can remember, I now run it once a day from Llandudno to Bakoven and I catch the Miciti back, so I have a very good idea of most of the road users. Taxis and motorbikes are the problem.

In 2015 I wrote to the city about that specific spot where the accident occurred, sent them photos and asked them to manage it. They did a job.

In Dec 2025 I again asked to them to take urgent action, I supplied photos, (aerial and road use) and pleaded with them to take action, they closed the case and did nothing. I took it up again and eventually threatened them with public exposure. Eventually they sent a team to trim a bit of the bush back on the sea side, they did nothing about the other side of the road.

The problem with this section of road is that it is an S bend with bush and soil encroachment into the yellow line, which forces runners and cyclists into the road. It is also precisely the place where the illegally speeding overtaking taxis are forced back into the traffic at high speed to avoid a head on collision.

This was my final plea to the City in January:

“Let’s just hope nobody gets flattened by a car or minibus. These emails will serve as a matter of record.”

To be clear, today the taxis were doing the same, the motorbikes yesterday evening the same and the road conditions remain just as neglected.

Being on the scene yesterday just after it happened is not sitting well with me still today. This was avoidable and people should be held accountable.

I would like to see the City sued for a substantial sum of money for dereliction of their duty, so much so that people lose their jobs and the City is held accountable.

I would like to see the taxi driver successfully prosecuted for murder (dolus eventualis).

I am just totally sad but cannot say that I am shocked. I truly no longer feel like riding anywhere on the road, having had more than my fair share of close shaves. The behaviour of ZA road users is just getting more appalling by the day. 😟
