  3. Hi All, I am a newbie MTB rider and the bug has hit hard. For the past 3 months I have just been getting on to my bike and riding, I have had some basic advise that has worked well for me but I think the "self-taught" episode is coming to an end. What formal training clinics/schools would you recommend for MTB in Johannesburg? Thanks
  4. Hi there, Model Fork: Fox 32 Float Performance w/ 15thru-axle, overdrive steerer, 140mm travel. (I realize this is not a high grade fork and for a 32 at 140mm its not as good as say a 32 at 100mm) Wheels and Tyres: Onza Ibex 2.25 and Giant stock S XC-2 Tyre Pressure front 22/23psi and rear 26psi (up or down a few depending) Fork Pressure: recommended around 75 (set to sag) currently at 95 (reason why below) and shock around 155. Current weight 77.5kg 6 turns from the right (rebound) Running the stock 75mm stem with 760mm bars and one large spacer above. I have been riding for just over a year so Singletrack technique always needs improving. Problem i'm having is down a long section of ST the bike handles great with pro pedal on both fork and shock. Feeling firm but controlled in the front. Body position seems good, elbows bent, weight not too far back and keeping pressure on the front wheel. Switchbacks downhill and cornering good at a decent speed. Keep in mind I have upped the fork pressure to 95 (too high surely?) With that I end a ride with around 3cm or so of space above my spacer no big drops or anything. When I put the fork and shock into fully open here is the problem: I feel way less in control of the front end, the shock compresses pretty deep just leaning on it even at 95 psi and round switchbacks and corners it almost dives into its travel. Feeling sketchy compared to half locked (pro pedal) mode. I have come off the front a few times its dived so much into steep stuff. The bike is a 2016 model and pretty new only a few months 6/7 old. No service to the fork or shock yet. I thought of ordering a volume spacer or two and playing around with that? As I would like to setup the fork based on sag rather than over filling it to 95psi. Otherwise could it just be i'm putting to much weight on the front end around corners? or bad technique? Appreciate the feedback? Thought i'd ask here before taking it in and asking the shop. Sean Fox 32 Float Performance w/ 15mm thru-axle, OverDrive steerer, 140mm travel
  5. I recently discovered I will be disqualified from Hill2Hill if I do it on my new gravel/CX bike (and possibly won't even be allowed to start) because it has drop bars which are banned in CSA rules. Does anyone know of any justification for this restriction? Is there any way to appeal or bypass this restriction? Are there any suitable (edit: non-asphalt) races where I would be allowed to compete on the gravel bike?
  6. Just checking if someone is using the new cadence sensors on MTB. The old GSC 10 versions did not like mud and water and as a result did not work well (read last long) on the MTB. I'm planning on getting a new one for the MTB but I'm concerned about durability, especially the way it's fastened to the crank arm. anyone with feedback? (don't want to spend R800 on something that's going to get lost in the bush somewhere)
  7. I have an open question to all the Hubbers out there: Do you think there is room for bamboo bikes on the SA cycling stage? There are some very good arguments for bamboo bikes, but yet we don't see them around our races, on training rides or in the streets parked outside nice coffee bars. How do you think this observation is to be explained? Looking forward to your words of wisdom and insight. CB
  8. Hi guys, I have a friend who is doing the Argus this Sunday on a mountain bike. Will it be beneficial to change the tyres to slicks? Thanks!
  9. Hi, I have an entry spot available for the joberg2c - http://joberg2c.co.za/ - 21st - 29th April Entries for the race are full, so do get in touch if you're interested. Cheers
  10. Always used the Babba’s races as my go to race if there was nothing else on. There were 12 races a year held at Babba’s Lodge (northern Pretoria). At the December race it was mentioned that there will be changes. Looking at the website (www.francosport.co.za) it seems Babba’s is no more?
  11. Hey guys, Here's the deal: I want to know how much you would pay for this 2011 Rocky Mountain Element 30msl. Let's say the condition is very good (see ad pics). Throw a figure out, or provide a range: highest and lowest amount depending on whatever your criteria are. The ad has everything you need to know. 26" lovers and haters are ALL WELCOME. Throw the offer on the ground or press it tightly to your bosom and sing sweet songs of longing. Thanks for your input.
  12. Hi all, So I got given (indefinitely ) my brother in law's virtually brand new TACX Flow indoor trainer which I'd like to use with my MTB. He also has a MTB so he purchased the 28 inch wheel which is needed and it worked perfectly for him. When I tried to hook it up, I realised that it dosen't fit as it was causing the brake disc to touch my bike's frame when I tightened up the quick release. My LBS said that it won't work as my bike has the following: Roval Control SL 29 142+, DT Swiss Star Ratchet, XX1 driver body, 12mm thru-axle, 28h and that I would need to buy a new hub and have it put into the trainer wheel. This is what the trainer has:http://i446.photobucket.com/albums/qq183/marlin178/tacx_zpsrycxqlbd.jpg and what my bike has: http://i446.photobucket.com/albums/qq183/marlin178/DT_Swiss_12_x_142mm_Rear_Qr_zpsuf3wdwf3.jpg Question is: Do I need to get a whole new hub or is there a conversion kit of sorts available? I saw these on CWC- would they perhaps work? (Thru-axle adapter for x12mm (rear wheel) with cylindrical support for fixing the MTB´s with Taxc trainers) http://i446.photobucket.com/albums/qq183/marlin178/P-TRAINER%20ACCESSORIES-TRAIAC-TACX-T1709-----_1_zps14wd9hjy.jpg Link: http://www.cwcycles.co.za/product/tacx-trainer-adapter-x-12-axle Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!
  13. Hello all, I want to buy my first MTB shoe pair. My knowledge on MTB shoes is very weak and would like some recommendations from you guys who went through a couple of shoes. Okay, so my budget is R1000 (still need to get clipless pedals too). Currently looking at getting this: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/za/en/dmt-borealis-mtb-carbon-italy-shoes/rp-prod150006 To be honest, I only went for this due to the words 'Carbon' and secondly the price. Is carbon shoes any good? Or should I go for other material? Also noted that it does not come with cleats. Will any cleats fit that specific shoe? Overall on what I do: I like doing ride (40km) over the weekend and will be doing the Karoo2Coast next year. If this is necessary, I am a very light rider. Any advice will be appreciated. ~ André
  14. I'm relatively new to this website but I'm finding it more and more frustrating when searching the "complete bikes" category under MTB. Advertised bikes seem to sort of spew randomly across the first 5 or 6 pages, making it very difficult to just see anything new that's come in (and not been gratuitously bumped up above other, often more reasonable items). I get that money has to come from somewhere but sheez, trying to work through classifieds often amounts to simply refreshing the page to see the same ads over and over again. What can I do to make my browsing more enjoyable, or does anyone feel the same way?

  16. After about 15 years of singlespeeding I’ve finally got a bike with gears again. I bought it second-hand, and it looks like the chain and/or cassette are worn and will need to be replaced. It’s a 2×9 setup, and that suits me, so I’ll probably just get a 9-speed XT cassette and a couple of chains. Seems to be the best value for money option, and the gear range suits me. (I think it was probably a 3×9 originally, but the big ring has been replaced with a bash ring.) But, for the future, will I be able to just pop on a 10-speed cassette instead? (Assuming I change the derailleur and shifter too, obviously.) Or is the freewheel body spacing or spline pattern different? The hub is a Sun Ringlé − not sure which model. I’m trying to catch up on 15 years of tech development as quickly as I can − clutch derailleurs, NW chainrings, boost spacing… it’s an exciting and confusing new world! And expensive − I remember why I went singlespeed in the first place, especially with all this chain slip, bad shifting, etc. None of that with my fat BMX chains, even with really worn chainrings. Also, I assume that SRAM 9-speed is compatible with Shimano 9-speed, 10-speed with 10-speed, etc? I have SRAM X9 shifters, X0 rear derailleur, and Shimano XT front derailleur, but the Shimano chain and cassette options seem to be easier to get here and good value for money, particularly in the 9-speed range.
  17. Do you lubricate a MTB rear derailleur and with what lubricant and how often?
  18. Hello everyone For about four years now I've been telling myself I want to get into mountain biking. I've tried it a few times with rented bikes and absolutely loved it. So I'm looking at buying myself a bike. Problem is, I know almost nothing about bikes. I've been to a few shops and been offered entry level bikes ranging from R4000 to R10,000. I don't want to get ripped off but I also don't want to buy a terrible bike that won't last long. I'm a 25 year old male, weighting 95kg and 1.89m tall. What type of bike should I get? Any brands you can recommend and where to buy them? Thanks very much for your time.
  19. Hi there - quite new to the addictive MTB sport and looking at a decent entry level bike for around 5-6k. I have seen some decent well specced Titan Sports, Giant Revels and Axis A60's, but having difficulty on choosing. Is there a sort of ranking sheet i can refer to, lol? I am about 1.74m , weighing around 90kgs and looking for something smooth, strong and fast. I dont intend becoming an avid trail rider, but possibly looking at the light trails now and then. will propably do more Beach, recreational pavement riding. in addition, what do you reckon is my frame size? i would think medium based on the chart sizing guides. What are your thoughts?
  20. I am about to purchase the Merida Ninety Six 6000 dual suspension bike, here is the full spec: http://www.merida-bikes.com/en_int/bikes/full-suspension/cross-country-marathon/2017/ninety-six-6000-6360.html This bike retails for R47000, but with some discount, I can get it for R36000. Is this worth it?
  21. Black Friday started a bit early here at Bike Addict. Ends 26th November https://bike-addict.co.za/collections/bike-addict-deals
