...picked up a Park Tool speed-link chain splitter tool; i did teach myself how to do it with pump plyers, but it was fiddly, so bought the right tool for the job!

 

Around R295; the cheaper alternative tool was only R40 less, so went for Park!

After my tools and stuff i carried on my bike went missing when it got appropriated...i just reverted to this method...works fine, just slightly more faffing involved than with a proprietary tool. a long cable tie works too. Edited by morneS555

2.5mm thick weed eater cord also works.

 

Whilst cleaning the bike during lockdown I remembered the shoe lace trick and the weed eater cord was all I had at my disposal, there is now a 300mm long piece of it in my cycling tools tool box.

Sounds like a much better option than shoelaces. I've always found shoelaces have a bit too much elasticity to it.

I have always used long-nose pliers to do this. Just pinch the link on the two "fixed" sides diagonally across from each other.

 

Also, slightly-related major shout-out to SRAM with the derailleur cage locking pin. Man, for a guy that takes both wheels and chain off for every wash (once a week, basically) that thing kicks so much ass and is so simple.

I grip 'em on the outside ends. Slack chain, fold it so that the link you're breaking is perpendicular to both the others, then....
