I don't do much in terms of big woodwork projects simply because I don't have the space. I've recently had such a bad experience with rubbish SA Pine that I have also decided to rather just go to Rarewoods and find something better. Even if it costs a lot more, the limited nature of my woodwork projects means that it is not the biggest issue. I do things that I enjoy. So, to struggle and waste time, making something that should be fun, into something frustrating and miserable, makes no sense. I just won't try the rubbish I wood I used last time, ever again. Inconsistent thickness, extremely variable density, had to spend time selecting the straightest ones, then finding half of it warped after a week or two anyway. Never again!

I hate Pinus Crappus with a passion. Only do basic structural stuff with it. And even then it brings out the Frenchman in me. I have a few bananas here that I bought a while ago at Somerset Timbers. Tried a few wall panels with that interlocking planks that they sell also, and it all bent and twisted that  the panels is useless as well, panels. Can use it as see-saw though.

Sure Meranti is nice but was not really an option because its has got silly expensive

10x Main rafters were 25x152mm   4.6m, that cost around R1200

That in Meranti . .I shudder to think, at least 10x - 20x

But even decking ,,,, would not waste my money on Meranti Anything exposed to water is going to go south in a few years unless you give it very regular (and tedious) TLC, except possibly Balau , which is even more silly expensive.

There is that fake composite 'wood' though I 'wood' use if I was ever going to build a deck again.

I was also surprised at the latest prices for Meranti when I saw that. There as some other better woods that is available at the same price or only slightly more expensive.

At last I have something in my cycling range pens to show again. (Well, this is the first one actually!  ).

The wood is wild olive that I finished with spray on Polyeurethane.  But I must say, it is too shiny to my liking - think I will simply use BLO again next time.

The pen is a Magnetic Vertex Rollerbal in Gun Metal with a carbon fibre barrel.  The cap post magnetically onto the pen and back end.

The chain is a SRAM 1031 that I found in my garage - cannot remember where I got it.

I must say, the stand took MUUUCH longer to make than the pen itself.

Sorry for the crappy photos, was late at night with a cellphone in a dimly lit room.

I will be making a few more in support of a friend's son that will be going to Egypt this month for African Continental Track Champs representing SA.

The pen is R 600 and the stand is R 1 000.  Send me a PM if you want one (PS:  I can customise both the pen and stand, so send me a PM and we can chat - I can also arrange engraving if required, maybe your favourite bike brand on the barrel?).

Before the year is out, I would like to have a proper lament about the lack of decent treated structural timber here.

I've been busy on a patio awning rebuild project for someone and went the treated timer route, and only one choice here: SA Pine. Got some planks from Noags market, I did try make a selection for decent timber, but...

Come to erecting the rafters, just about every plank has its issues: warping, knots everywhere, buckling, variation in width and thickness, variation in density, just generally unpleasant to work with and a challenge to say the least... uuurgh.

I hear you, it’s a fight we have with the mills constantly, and they just point you to the spec for Structural timber and say it’s within spec. But people working with it don’t want to deal with twist, wane and all other “allowable” defects. Not to mention the mould that comes from one of the big mills...

That being said, we will always do our best to supply a quality piece of timber suitable for your needs. Decent quality is available, and we will plane and cut to size, and then have it treated to your requirements.

Treated timber is a requirement in the coastal regions, so more often than not comes pre treated from the mills, in Gauteng, it is not required, so we treat after cutting and planing. What is then critical is making sure it is properly strapped when it dries to prevent bowing and twisting.

You’re welcome to contact me directly on DM if you want me to assist.

Right chaps.

I need some advice on how to restore this bench.

It is an old bench from one of the JHB trams that my Dad "borrowed" when they were decommissioned.

I do not have the skill set to take it apart - but I would love to restore it.

So option A is someone in the CT area that can restore this ...

or option B, give me some advice on how to go about this project.

Looks like something Le Turbo would be able to sort, come to think of it though, haven’t seen any posts from him in a long time!

Some creative posts on here!

I am starting a project of building a fairly large farm-style dining room type table using an old reclaimed solid wood garage door as top.

I am considering thick turned legs.

Does anyone know of someone in Centurion or greater Pretoria area that can turn or sell wooden legs?
