Some nice insights in this thread.

Truly appreciate John's input.

With a little one in the Spur series I get a nice view of the parents, the kids, and the coaches at this level ....

Having taken some photos for some of the events and coaches I have had the opportunity to hear some interesting stories ....

Some personal opinions ...

In principle it is good for the kids to take part in these events.

Learning some life lessons along the way.

Cultivating a hunger to do better .... without undue pressure .... sad to see some of the kids being pressured (primary school kids).

Learning that constant and regular exercise pays off over time .... yet another life lesson.

But I have to agree with one of the sucessful local coaches. Primary school kids should concentrate on skills, and gradually build stamina. Some of the 12 year olds embark on structured race training .... whole different ball game.

Disclaimer .... Maritz is squarely mid pack.... wont be sending his Strava link to John, not yust yet ....

As a company we won’t coach any child younger than 16. In some circumstances we will help develop and guide a year or 2 younger and teach them how to train. The skills as mentioned above is one we strongly encourage. They can actually train without knowing f they training if this is done correctly.

Mid pack believe it or not are some of the best athletes to work with, their progression is often the best of any type of athlete. I often get the “I am not or my child Is not a pro but would you look at coaching me?” The answer is always yes cause I really enmities that type of athlete as that process is always great with them.

To me if I work with someone going from a 4hr to a 3hr Argus or winning a GT, the feeling I have is the same. A goal has been reached and that person is happy and I am happy the work done was good enough for them to achieve that.

Louis is going to have to climb himself into a new team.

At the rate he climbs that's likely to be a SA semi-amateur team.

This pretty much sums up the gist of the last few posts here.  Louis is for all intents and purposes one of the best cyclists to to come out of South Africa and he's probably going to struggle to get a team next year.  The fact that he isn't guaranteed of a Team should prove to Mom and Dad that young Billy is most likely never going to make it as a pro.

Yup.

I helped out a youngster a few years ago. Did well in SA, few Elite podiums, lots of u23 wins etc. Decided he wants to go pro.

He went to Europe for a season, saw what it was really like out there.Came back and started a normal career.

No point in pissing against the wind with false hopes and dreams.

Unless you are riding off the front of SA peloton with 50km to go and staying away, like Willie or Brendon used to do, you stand snowballs chance in hell in WT.

Indeed, people often joke about how bad Louis is and that he spends too much time at the back of the peloton but the fact remains that he is as good as it gets in this country.

How many world class road cyclists have we produced over the last 30 years?  I can think of only three...

South Africa is never going to beat Belgium in cycling and Belgium is (probably) never going to beat South Africa in rugby... that is just how it is.

My Wife has a very successful Triathlon Coaching Company and she went to the Youth Olympics in 2018 as the Junior Triathlon Coach/Team Manager so she has a lot to do with Juniors as well as parents - and by default I get to hear some of the stories.  It's very similar in Triathlon - there are only 30 or so places on the WTS league and if you don't have the points you just don't get to go.  A lot of parents have got pretty angry with her when she's pointed out that your kid needs to at least be winning an African Cup race before you can even think of going overseas.

The other thing that probably needs mention is Parents that agree to let their kids leave school to pursue a career in sport.  It takes one crash (John Lee Augustyn), or one stupid celebrity Touch rugby match (that's you Wade) or one night of passion (we'll keep that one a secret!) and your career is over at 20.  You better have something solid to fall back on!

I am assuming that those three are Rob Hunter (stage wins at all three GT's), Daryl Impey and Louis Meintjes. dsw can correct me if I'm wrong but those are the only one's that particularly spring to mind.

One crash.... Mcleod used to ride for FDJ until he had a bad crash too. Can only wonder where he would have ended up if he didnt crash.

LOL - shall we resurrect the Robbie Hunter vs Greg Minnaar fight from all those years ago

Can only think of Hunter, Impey and Meintjies... Not sure if there was anyone in the 90's / early 2000's

Mcleod, Smit, Augustyn, Thompson, Van Rensburg, Dlamini, Janse Van Resburg, Gibbons, Cox*

There's maybe a few more that rode at WT level. (edit: added Gibbons)

*never got to realise his true potential, but I think showed enough to be included.
