Florida police officer who tasered teen cyclist (gets written warning)

OK, the kids are playing silly buggers...

When a cop says stop then stop.

Not stopping will result in actions.

Maybe next time he’ll shoot the bikes tyre flat instead of using minimum force[emoji106]

Yup, if someone refuses to listen to those orders then I feel rocks for the outcome.

So my question is this.... What in your opinion is the best desired outcome of this legal battle?

He's not gonna get to Olympics... So? Loss of income? From an already cash strapped org.. Possibly at the expense of the environment being protected

That the perpetrators get sufficiently dealt with.. Or fired?

That the permit system be looked at/improved?

Others?

I don't think too many people have actually thought about what possible outcomes there are for the continued action.

Some people have used this as a starting block to slam all things Parks and TMNP across a heap of mediums.

They can't simply 'do away' with permits and they can't not police the networks of trails.

So realistically, what is the goal? To teach Parks a lesson in humility?

I have said this before and will say it again, if I was TMNP and Parks I would ban bikes from the mountain. It's evident that all any good they have done, permissions granted etc is not appreciated and the bad press and publicity brought about by this incident outweighs any monetary subsidies they would receive from bikers.

Extreme? Maybe, but this has just created a massive storm for them that wouldn't exist if bikes weren't allowed. The press and public bashing by the cycling community aimed at all of parks' short comings (not related to this incident) is not something any organisation wants to deal with, so why not cut it off at the head?

Can the public backlash be worse than it has been?

No tokai, no blockhouse, no silvermine.... No signal hill, Lions head, Glen or Pats track..... That is all trail that has had permission 'granted', which can just as easily be taken away.

I'm sure people will poopoo me in a hundred ways, but this is the SA government. You heard it here first........

Personally, all I want from this is to see the heavy handed official get prosecuted for assault, whatever the prescribed minimum sentence is is fine.

Don't punish everyone for the actions of one. He should carry the consequences of his actions. Even if it means that the actual sentence is suspended for 5 years due to it being a 1st offence, at least he will have a finding against him.

If the judgement also places a directive on SANPARK to ensure a protocol is put in place for handling of rogue riders then that will be cherry on top.

Good point. And no West Coast National Park and who know what else (considering the way in which masses – yes, a very large percentage of summer cyclists – blatantly ignore the no-go rules I would not be surprised).

Fair enough to be vocal about aggressive rangers, but as a community we'll get a lot further working with the authorities than against them (and no, fair does not come into this discussion, being Africa and all ... ).

They can't ban cyclists.

They don't own the land. We do. They are merely custodians of the land. It's there job to take care of the park. Which they are doing an appalling job of.

Some logic please.

Dude, where have you been? You don’t own any land, even the land you think you own you don’t own.

Yes they can but it would be a failure of their custodianship of the parks

How so?

Their main objective is conservation and reclamation, not activities. A few years ago they closed Orange kloof and certain ravines to the public for the area to recover after various fires and erosion etc yet despite clear signposts, they still haul hundreds of locals and hikers out of there a week. Same with Piers Cave.

They will tell you that too much money goes into policing the cyclists, processing their permits/cards and monitoring access, which is stopping them from doing real work. They will use this as an example as 'even pro riders ride in the park without permits' so who can they trust?

Also, on another angle, if you think the current government cares about 'failure over it's custodianship', are you purposefully ignoring SAA, Eskom etc?! hahahaha

I'm just suggesting that it is a real possibility if the cycling community continues to attack and paint TMNP in a negative light at every opportunity, related to this incident or not.

It is spiteful and well, a very common reaction to spite is spite itself
