Cape Epic without spectators - Not Epic

I think everyone will be happy if the event is cancelled and we focus on 2022. The uncertainty and risks is just to high and take all fun out off the event. a Cape Epic without spectators is a big NO and then there is the strong possibility no international riders, thus is not a epic event. Why taking the risk with the uncertainty and putting up stage towns and spending money and the risk is still there that the event will be cancelled. We do not want to end up in the same situation like 2020. The families and spectators also bring the money to the regions. Be safe and make most people happy and cancel. No uncertainty and all is happy. Then 2022 will be kick ass event with all the Olympian medalists as well. I am very unhappy if we are forced to proceed under these crap regulations. This will not be a Epic, virtual cannot replace the experience sorry

Think under the circumstances they've put forward a good compromise, they need to present some form of plan and it needs to be in line with the current circumstances. We don't know what may change, just as likely the situation could also improve.
At least they've been open with the comms.
Many towns and staff are dependant on the income Cape Epic brings, spectators or no.

Strong views, and apart from the initial “ I think...” everything else presented as near-fact; a couple of “in my opinion” would not have gone amiss....

La Vuelta,TdF and Giro had MUCH reduced spectators, and to be honest (I have done 3 Epics) other than opening and closing days, spectators, whilst adding value, are less critical than you might think; this is not the CT Cycle Tour on Suikerbossie.

I hear you, but instead of lobbing a ball to see where it lands, you’ve smashed a volley.

I do not NEED spectators, they are an added plus....

Cheers

Chris

If it doesn't go ahead in 2021 there may never be another Epic. They have still been paying people to main trails, they have admin costs (yes, people have been planning, weighing up options, looking at scenarios, asking what ifs, etc). These costs have not disappeared, and the financial impact of not hosting it in 2021 will be detrimental.

I think everyone will be happy if they can ride the Epic, with or without spectators

Similar discussion on the DC thread ....

The RIDERS dont "need" spectators ... so events can proceed without them.

That said, how many Epic riders come to the Cape with friends and family ? Would any riders skip the Epic/DC/other event because their family could not spectate ?? Doubt this would be a significant number .... would be interesting to hear from the riders.

As a total aside .... wonder what the financial impact would be of no spectators ? Less accommodation ? Less restaurant turn over? Would be interesting to know the percentage this adds to an event ....

Hard reality .... under the current rules nobody can host an event with spectators .... rather proceed without spectators. Riders get to enjoy their sport. Organisers get turn over and can pay salaries. Supporting services gets money.

Benefits far outway the loss of spectators .... this from DC spectator, missing out this year

I would think, given the size of some of the towns the race goes through, accommodation will sold out with/without supporters - there isn't always enough. Bigger towns with more accommodation would probably feel it more

Did they refund 2020 entrants?  Genuine question - I don't know?  If they didn't then surely they are in no different position than normal?

On the other hand, if all 2020 entries got deferred to 2021 at no cost or they refunded, then your point is valid.

No refunds, but entry coupons (and an additional 25% entry fee) that can be rolled over to 2022, should 2021 be cancelled.

I am still excited about taking part. It could be my only chance, so I will make the best of it despite the situation we’re in. Yeah, I am also disappointed that the prologue and grand finale will be without the “gees”, but there may be a special arangement for those days by that time. As for the masks etc. in the race villages, we’re so used to it now that it won’t make a huge difference in the overall experience. This will be a very unique Epic, and will just add to many participants’ life stories.
