how many entries did they have this year ? How many people actually started ?

I'm seeing on FinishTime they are showing only around 9500 finishers (it was at 8500 yesterday afternoon though)

12 607 Entered
9 518 Finished

This is according to www.ridejoburg.co.za results page.

Any idea if the other ladies racing sent out a condolences to Emma and backed her or they just happy they moved up a spot?

I don't follow her on Social Media, but my Wife does and she said that Cherise Willeit wrote a very nice piece saying she felt really sorry for Emma - but she also said the bunch was confident they would have caught her if she didn't have the extra 2mins.

Saw an elite ride absolutely eat the proverbial excrement as we were heading out. When we got back they had found half a meter of rubber and lots of red tape and made it a hit safer however I feel considering how well they did with all the other potential issues this diepsloot that they missed feels a bit odd

Was this around 8:30? I saw an Elite rider on the ground not moving, face down covered in blood. He was being attended to by someone only for another rider to crash into them, he proceeded to scream and shout quite bizarrely. The rider on the floor still didn't move. I was thinking about this during the entire race and just hope he is ok.

Is the DNF rate normally so high????

Maybe lots of DNS due to the weather

Was just about to type that too. That storm on Saturday night might have put people off riding on what we all expected to be wet roads.

I'm glad someone saw the light and they are reviewing:

"Upon further inspection of the footage, it became clear that the markers were in place a short while earlier when the elite men passed the same area. We now believe that the markers were displaced by the downdraft and gust caused by the helicopter which flew low in this section of the route while filming the men’s race. The organisers regret not having a marshall positioned there to correct the situation.

We believe that Emma appealed the decision based on the video footage supplied. As event organisers, we don’t act as commissaires, but we will supply time split times, photos and video footage if it will assist in resolving the appeal process. The 947 Ride Joburg team hopes that this will be resolved swiftly and fairly."

I saw quite a lot of bikes loaded on sweep vehicles during the day, it would help though to note how many riders 'Started' the race as yeah quite a few of those 3000 may have been DNS but it is a lot.

Sad how this post seems to be more about the ladies ride and Emma than about the actual race.

Can we talk about the ride from the view of the average person and what was good and what wasn't good.

I'm sure the organizers want feedback.

I think soccer city as a venue is a winner.

I also liked Soccer City. Coming from PTA, it is further than the previous venue for me, but definitely worth the effort. Lots of space and the access routes described in the Rider Brief was accurate for me to get in and out efficiently.

Congestion at the Loading gate was fine, seemed better than previous editions of the race.

There was a bit of congestion inside the stadium after finishing when passing the podium, but it might have only been an issue when I passed as that was the exact moment they were presenting the winners of the Mens and Womens ELITE races. Don't know if anyone else experienced congestion there?

Route commentary: I think the route is fine, you just need to be strategic about your matches and leave plenty for climbing Jan Smuts, plenty of sharp inclines there that will destroy overused legs. I think Jan Smuts will break more people next year if we have the heat returned to the 35°C windstill conditions.

I did some marshalling (Think Bike marshals) in the late 2000's.  At a few races I was on the leading bike for the Elite Men.  I was very fortunate that the route mess never happened, but at a race or 2 (fortunately I was marshalling later groups then) the routes were changed by the organisers.  This was done WHILE the bunch was racing.  The only people informed were in the lead car.  The lead bike was informed and then usually fell back close to the "change in route" point and the lead car took over.  BUT, typically a TB marshal would then stay behind and wait for a "foot" marshal to take over the point.  One of the risks discussed often by the marshals was what would happen if the lead car was not reached? The elite riders trust the leading vehicles (whether car or motorbike).  So Emma following the lead car was the accepted operating procedure.

I do however agree that Emma should have turned around and gone back when she reached the danger tape.  The lead car made a major mistake here by going through the tape and the driver should take the blame for the mess at that point.

wait, so did she ride with the subvets group after kyalami or on her eis? that would make a huge difference if it wasn't a 50km itt

my one takeaway from this is:

a) they are managing it

b)the bunting she had to climb over was way more obvious and useful than the one she missed. they sought of own up for that

. From everyone’s perspective it seemed like a few guys having a good time in someone’s Porsche without any concept of their responsibility to the race, very poor PR.

imagine they were excited at first,  but got bored when they realised almost stalling in 2nd gear is not exactly instagram worthy. could be reason why they didn't have eyes on the road.

This was my first 947 challenge and I really enjoyed it. I thought that FNB Stadium was perfect, easy to access (as long as you were aware of what roads were closed and how to get around), lots of parking (I arrived at 08:00, and I got a parking just next to the start).

I thought the route was challenging, but fun. I see how some people were complaining that it does not show off Joburg…well I don’t fully understand that as what route would show off Joburg? We started at FNB Stadium, got to see a bit of Soweto, rode past some of Joburgs iconic gold mine dumps, went through a little bit of an industrial area along main reef road, through town, both there and back, past Melrose, Rosebank, Hyde Park, Monte Casino, a lap around Kyalami, through some of the Joburgs suburbs, with Santas lane being wonderfully decorated, past the zoo…..I just don’t see how that does not show off Joburg?

That climb up Jan Smuts by the zoo was for me the toughest climb (thank goodness it was cool weather, otherwise it would have been even tougher), was a real grind up there. Overall I thought it was a fantastic day out, lots of support from spectators, great vibes from everyone, and overall just well organised.

So the helicopter displaced vertically (note, did not blow over) this one solitary delineator to a position right in the middle of the left-turn gap...alternatively the helicopter blew all the delineators into a perfect straight line where it aligned wonderfully with the danger tape.

Extraordinary.

4 of them were blown over. I can see how it can happen that one of them could have drifted into the extraordinary position shown below. Stuff happens.

Do you suspect foul play? Or what plausible suggestion do you bring to the table?
