Wednesday Night Ride.

I have not really done a night ride since Delta Park lap racing stopped. I have used my lights mainly for early mornings, where only a short period of illumination is required.

Last night was the inverse.

We rode with a great bunch of folks into the wild west. The idea was to grab a bite in Magalliesburg, and then roll back to the start point.

We were treated with some of the best the Highveld has to offer. The green grass from all the rain made it simply spectacular.

Into the sun. Makes even a simple dirt road sketchy

Phone Camera making magic by shooting into the sun, and not be overexposed.

We crested a ridge, and was treated to the sunset, Cant believe this is so close to Joburg. Felt like we were miles from anywhere.

With our backs to the sunset, there were some impressive Clouds in the distance, painted pink by the sun,

Stopped at the steers, just before they closed, and grabbed some fast food, before the ride back.

Some singletrack sections through the veld, where a bit of concentration was required.

Over the railroad bridge, not as ominous as usual, because you cant see to the bottom....

As one draws closer to the end of the ride, the pace starts picking up. Photos stops being taken.

Just shy of 60 clicks for the night, and one of the best Rides I have had up in the Highveld...

Faure waterworks climb?

Ummmmm no!

Faure waterworks descent

I could not control the bike with one hand while the other is trying to take a pic going up that climb. And besides, all you would see is tar and a red garmin showing 7km/hr ...which is really boring.

That’s 7km/h faster than sitting on the couch....

My bike....took me to work (Hout Bay to Paarden Eiland).

Nothing unusual there, b-u-t I put some new wheels and tyres on, and wow, did my commuting time plunge off a cliff, approx 10 mins off a 1h15 min commute...!

Of course KNOWING I had a new set-up, I shaved every corner, pushed a little bit harder, and there was near-zero wind, but 10 minutes less...?!

A serious shout-out to Matthew at CWC, who helped me as far as he could, gave me great time, and then referred me across to the Specialized Tygerberg shop...

...where Mike Switzer knocked it out of the park; he remembered he had a pair of Specialized ROUBAIX gravel 30/32 700c tyres that would fit back in the store-room, they were indeed tubeless, seemingly on special at just R400 each,  and then he checked they would fit my rim profile, I had them fitted, later at home I swapped the cassette on to my new-to-me Easton 70 rims, ...and I flew in to work.

Smiles all around!

Chris
