Is it Friday yet?

I know I'm old/er and into vintage bikes but I still appreciate the form and function of a well made carbon bike or quality piece of cycling equipment.

However, one of the things that really grates my nerves is this industry drive to make hubs as loud as possible. I was recently sitting in a bunch, trying to have a conversation with the rider next to me and the rider in front of me had a hub so loud that couldn't hear the oke next to me. I eventually just asked him to at least soft pedal rather than freewheel because he was making a bloody racket.

Gees Louise, when is loud, loud enough? Some of these things are just a total bloody irritation. Granted, some are louder than normal but actually sound pretty good.
A mate has a set of Industry 9 Hydras on his MTB and those things sound sweet AF, probably because they remind me of my fishing reel when I get hit by a bus of a steenbras 😄

Am I alone in feeling this way or is my age catching up on me?

you are NOT alone! Having myself a quiet day on Chappies, then…. Krrrr, Krrr, Krrrr….

I have never heard LOUD (high-engagement) hubs on entry-level bikes, but I seem to hear LOUD hubs whenever the Pas Normal Studios /  the riders who wear ‘Plum’, ‘Apricot’, ‘Avocado’ or ‘Stone’ colors, you know, the non-greeters… pass me… 😇

Nee oh hell, it reminds me of these tappits that cruise around in their dropped Citi Golfs with loud pipes and the bass pumping thinking their car is fast because it makes a moerse racket 🙄😉

Imagine the next fashionable thing is lowering your bike 😵‍💫

I was about to hint at the "low" culture where VTec's crawl over speed bumps sideways while they  sound like the proverbial Tasmanian devil in a stocking .......

Have you thought that it may be your hearing?  #justsaying. Will leave now.

Age is not for the feinthearted :-).

I do like a set of Hopes but they are loud. New multi point engagement ones sound like buzzing bees.

Pack in some more grease , that will quiet them down by a few decibels

Watched a guy try to drive his lowered Polo over a cattle grate late last year. He made his lady friend disembark and spot for him as he tried to cross over. I patiently waited in my Isuzu before he saw me and politely offered that I go first. I wanted to watch the show but he insisted. 😂

Then last week I watched a chap drive his lowered Corolla over some rough farm road at Faircape. He was basically scraping his exhaust system all along that road as he came past.

The mind boggles.

Yeah, 100% in agreement.

I was devastated when my new fancy(for me) Hunt carbon wheels arrived and the freehub was so loud I couldn't hold a conversation when freewheeling downhill ☹️

Reasonably noisy hubs on the mtb around here are “kind of beneficial”. I don’t need to worry about getting scolded for “not using” or “using” my bell from uppity Constantia walkers on the green belts… It would be nice, however, if it was totally silent. Nothing but the sound of tires and suspension and chain slap on downhills.

I'm going to be 'that guy' and say that the green belt walkers are only as uppity as the bike riders who don't slow down, stop or consider the kids/dogs/old people who they are supposed to 'share the trails with'

For most bike riders, sharing means they can ride as fast as they feel entitled to and everyone else must get out of the way

I see it all the time as I ride there, run there, walk there, take the kids and dogs there

Bike riders come zooming past ringing bells and shouting warnings but don't slow down, don't stop and get angry if anything gets in their way.

90% of cyclists on the green belts treat other users like cars treat cyclists - as an inconvenience who need to get out of the way so they can go where and how they want unimpeded.

I ride those trails often and have never encountered an uppity/unpleasant walker who is treated as a vulnerable user, given space, distance and thought.

Anyway, back to the topic..... Loud hubs are annoying but pale in comparison to the obnoxious loudlyness of Motorbikes, cars, people blaring theur doef doef with open windows and the general entitlement of people.

(Also, ignore me. I'm just really over the drunk, littering, inconsiderate masses that have descended on and ruined the deep south over the last month)
