There were 5 guys in the car and all were intoxicated. 3 of them were hurt and taken to hospital. I know because we had family at the scene as one of cyclists was a cousin of mine 😢

Thank you for clarifying, so sorry to hear that 😥

In this country , radar is not really gonna save one. We need real consequences for drunken driving. These people having caused death should end up behind bars for the rest of their days (ironically at taxpayers expense).

This is not the thread for determining how we as cyclists must also behave but to your point about following vehicle , I read an article earlier this week about an island near Europe (forgot the name) where the locals have had it with the cyclists also doing as they please and their big bugbear (since its only two lanes), is that the cyclist and their support vehicle was messing things up.

In my case, I stopped riding on Sunday mornings because the risk is just so much higher for us. Sadly today another person I knew has passed.

Radar does make me feel safer. But it is a rational expectations device, not something that will save my life when an irrational object/person hurtles towards me with no respect for my life.

Didn't know these guys and not sure whether I've been on this road (maybe Race4Victory), but condolences to all. K*k thing to see on the hub, painful knowing that some technicality will result in justice being delayed, and the absolute sadness of the nearest.

This is absolutely horrific.

coming home from an awesome ride with mates to this news hits very hard. It engenders fear, resentment, sorrow and intense anger.

How are the families of these fellow cyclists, almost certainly breadwinners, ever supposed to recover from this needless tragic loss. Condolences to the them all.

Exactly those feelings. I watch the stream of speeding cars in the haze of the morning traffic and think about all the riders who have been killed and the 12k annual road deaths... How is this normal?.

A following vehicle is probably the safest thing to have

A following car can help, but isn’t a guarantee for safety.

A few years ago, four club mates were hit from behind (luckily only bikes were damaged, and a few emotional scars). That was after the drunken driver hit our back up car first, swerved off the road, then back on, and into the back of the group; the club car was a write off. Luckily his speed was scrubbed from hitting the car before he came to a complete stop.

The carnage on our roads is diabolical. A homicidal drunk driver should receive appropriate sentences - long jail time. I hope the Jhb cyclists/PPA keep an eye on this case just like the Sheriff killing in CT and make sure the prosecution is dealt with properly.

News like this makes a person feel truly hopeless. You see the constant idiocy happening on our roads daily, while on the bicycle, motorbike or in the car and you feel helpless in how to find a solution.
Rules and regulations are pointless without action and it's the apathy of action that's the reason for this repeated carnage. A failed state with so many other problems that ones like this seem insignificant to them.

R.I.P. fellow riders and condolences to the loved ones left behind that have to pick up the pieces of broken lives 😢

The radar I found helps in certain scenarios, changing lanes or crossing an off ramp. But does not prevent drunk drivers

I think the real problem is consequence management and the enforcement. The punishment is just sometimes a slap on the wrist. There is always a mention of "Zero Tolerance", but is it actually Zero Tolerance as the message portrays something different (sentence received when found guilty).

Is there really a deterrent...don't think so. Looking a the example of ChrisF made "Table next to us two lightweight ladies down 3 drafts each .... then drive off ...." What is needed is that one or two cops just randomly do a stakeout and restaurants or pubs, and actually asking people to stop for a quick breather test, but then if found guilty the sentence should send a clear message that people need to think twice. Then only can we speak Zero Tolerance.

💯 this, I’ve found it to be one of my best purchases!
Also when on my own I can decide to move onto the kerb/shoulder if need be. Particularly enroute to a group ride.

People may hate this, but I feel some of the alcohol restrictions around lockdown should be brought back into effect. They made a noticeable difference when out and about in the twilight hours.

Have to agree with you on the restrictions.
reading comments on X about alcohol consumption and driving, it’s as if there is something wrong with you if you DONT drive drunk.

but, again, it boils down to the will to do anything about it by the law enforcement. We have the laws, but they are simply not enforced.
