Step one was to track down a 10 speed 11-40 cluster .... scarce item .... fitted late afternoon, and tested minutes later .....

You simply cannot go wrong with Park Tool.  Take this advice from someone who tried to buy cheap tools......and threw most of them away to buy Park Tool. I like their website too. Invaluable when you have to do a job for the 1st time and have no idea how to go about it. Search and learn. They are happy to share knowledge. I like! :)

I have been contemplating going on a basic bike maintenance course for years. Reckon you will save enough not going the bikeshop for basic things to buy something cool frequently

Home DIY is VERY rewarding .. and also an expensive learning school .... stripping bolts, damaging expensive parts is part of the learning school.

But I still LOVE it !!!  Just spent a few minutes in the garage ....

Not to go any further off-topic here - have a look at this thread, also from post 20 onward .... https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/167866-help-needed-chain-vs-cassette/

That said, I would still book it in with somebody like Marks Workshop for a proper service for the bigger stuff, and a professional tune-up.

Replacing the smaller pair I had and which tore post the big Conterman's Cheeky corners front wheel washout. Feels like a new bike.

I asked if they came with tassles but ....

Those are real nice grips ,they'd be my second choice after ESI's.

Move a torque wrench higher up your list of tools to get, maybe make it the NO 1 tool, especially if you have carbon bikes, seatposts, stems and handlebars!

And download a good reference manual, like the Shimano Dealers Manual, for a very good how-to (setups, torques, tool numbers, step-by-step troubleshooting, etc) on almost anything on your bike. It is well worth it to put on your laptop, then drag to the garage when you sukkel with something :)

Agree

Bolts get stripped because of cheap tools which wear heads/contact points out (most of the time when loosening because they were over tightened) and not using torque wrenches when tightening.

Broke in my new pair of shoes today.

Got these for the more social rides where there might be some walking and standing around involved.86bea406eaa1a01f6d0139c4c73fb967.jpgced3d2fe6fc8187938a5a6f2b507e8f2.jpg

Finally got round to fitting the last of my goodies onto my dikwiel: Shimano XT Trekking brakes (they have lekker long levers), 180mm IceTec rotors spaced to fit correctly at the rear, and a nice short 50mm KCNC stem :)

This finishes a transformation of a heavy clunker to a bike that has a lekker comfy seat and riding position now, weighs a bit less and actually stops when you brake :) Super happy now :) :) :) :)
