… with the obligatory dozens of bodyguards all wearing the same dark glasses.  How else could a politician possibly be assured of their importance?

A mayor in my city tried to increase his bodyguard count from 16 to 32, and intimidated an excellent and professionally head-hunted but short-lived municipal manager into hiding and resigning when she refused.

Watching cricket at Sydney CG was bonkers, I think the same rules were applied at Kamp Staaldraad.

Quantities of scale though. Say you are a business/shop owner in CBD. Now you need 24tons from a single supplier delivered once a week. Are you going to pay a driver 8 times to drive the goods in a 4 ton truck, pay 2 guys to repack a big truck into a smaller one, plus the extra fuel, tyre wear etc. When you can get a truck to deliver it one time for less?

The other option is to do this in the middle of the night when there are far less vehicles and cyclists on the road and the truck can then use both of the car lanes.

Like Duane I was also almost killed in Kalk Bay a couple weeks ago when an interlink truck overtook me on a corner and the rear of 2nd trailer almost clipped me. If I hadn't braked and gone into the gutter I wouldn't be writing this.

When I then catch the truck and question the driver his reasoning is that he had to do it because there was oncoming traffic. The thought of him waiting didn't even cross his mind. It blows my mind that these are meant to be professional drivers!

Ps: I'm curious wether there is solid stats about deaths involving trucks compared to taxis, motors and even drunk driving. I don't think that banning trucks will make a discernable difference.

Talking just cyclists killed by motorists my thumbsuck says

1. Alcohol
2. Texters
3. White double cabs

In my experience, Taxi's may drive like tools but they are at least concentrating on the job at hand.

You've all seen people doing 6 point turns in parkinglots because they dont know where their cars extremities are. Bigger cars (bakkies, Bmw's etc) just adds to this problem for them. I think that plays a big role too with close shaves. As mentioned above...you can say what you want aboutr how taxis drive but they know what size hole they can fit that thing into lol...most have the dents (school fees) to prove it.

In order of menace... Porsche Cayenne, any Audi, taxis, anonymous white Bakkies of various provenance.

This statistically derived from thumbsuck estimates based on today's little loop to houtbay.

It does seem to be getting worse and worse out there.

This is a great idea and something that the Aussies have also implemented and it works.

The problem here is the Unions....they ant their drivers to work normal 9to 5shift...

The big problem with SA......Unions

again...not unique to here. Unions and union workers in OZ are some of the laziest bastard you'll find on earth. Parents had first hand experience with this with the chicken farms and workers they managed. Why they tried very hard to get only Saffas to work there (but this is also frowned upon)...and some of them were ex-business owners on this side. But hard work in anything there will yield results. There is not that academic snobism there that you find here.

But its actually sickening how much opportunity  the avargae ozzy has, but how little ambition they have to be better. Thats what you get when you have a Dole system imo. Also why Oz is so open to importing premium skills (engineers, architects, doctors, lawyers).  And then they also generally have 'tall poppy syndrome', so don't think you will go there as a hard working Saffa and excel amongst your local peers. They'll try their very best to drag you down to the lowest common denominator so you wont make them look bad lol.

another thing that people think only happens here is women having babies so they don't have to work and just live off grants. It's a thing there too. Locals bagging them a foreign catch, getting pregos and again just sailing along with government grants. Actually know someone that this happened to haha. His kid turned 18 this year....doesnt even know her mother anymore - she probably moved on to the next project. Women roofie men there...be careful where you decide to plug in🤣

edit: sorry OT.

yesterday afternoon i was just doing a small ride bedding in my brakes after a bleed and a guy that was coming from the front did not have his indicator on to show that we was turning. Keep in mind i put my arm out to signal that i was turning and as i turned he turned and he and he side swiped me luckily i was not hurt and my bike is fine but his car has a lekker dent in the hood and scratch because of my pedals so please use indicators when turning it just takes the chance of someone getting hurt away

I've posted this before and it is from many years ago when a few mates and I regularly rode the Durban beachfront to Umdloti or Westbrook beach. The Umhlanga River bridge crossing is or was two lanes but not much of a yellow line section compared to the rest of the road. One morning I happened to be on the bridge when an interlink came barrelling down the hill, trailers weaving and a glance back showed the one set of wheels immediately behind me, or so it seemed. I hugged the balustrade and somehow the wheels zigged and I zagged and I survived.

BUT, from that day I refused to ride on the open roads, diverting into the sugar cane when almost nobody rode there but that is another storey. I reckon I am still alive from that decision. I will only ride with full road closure or just for a few hundred metres on surfaced roads when I have to. Lesson learnt.

One of those trucks converted to an overland bus things AAAAAAALMOST clipped my better half on that first left hand corner on Chappies about 4 years ago. PR's all the way to the 2nd lookout where I gave the driver a proper piece of my mind.

Some German tourist lady tried to intervene but her husband wisely pulled her back. I emailed the owner of said Truck/bus company on the Monday. No response.

We resolved after that incident that we ABSOLUTELY HAVE to be clear of Chappies by 8.30 before the busses come. And on the way back before 11.30 before the boy racers in their fiesta's come.

I'm ok with mandatory voting. You get given a day off and they spend a lot of effort organizing the damn thing.

I know your mom lives there and facts can ruin a good story, but you don't actually go to jail for not voting......

well it's a naughty then - a  'crime' and associated with a fine after 3 notices...after which they start suspending things like your drivers licences etc and come looking for their money. So yes i was probably being  a bit melodramatic...but one would gather that eventually it would lead to some sort of 'remedial' procedure lol. They do however take it more seriously with expats. They are big on the whole "assimilate or get bent' stance. It would be hard to forget though, the only reason we know is because in the past decade she has been here twice over an election there and they get very passive aggressive...to the point where they force, no -  aggressively ask you nicely? - to go do your voting at a consulate haha.

anyway. they suck 😊

Had an incident yesterday on Chappies. This time I was (one of) the motorists.

My other half and I took our dog out for a run. From the toll booth to the top and back is 5k. So we finished our run. Jump in the car and drive off. A group comes up on us and the one guy decides to use my bakkie to motorpace. Bad decision #1.

Then as we're getting close to the bottom some absolute RETARD FCKWIT MORON DUMBASS in a Hyundai Getz is in my lane busy overtaking a bunch of 3 abreast cyclists. Bad decision #2 and #3. I have to come to a complete stop to avoid a head on and the motorpace guy slams straight into my bakkie. The RETARD FCKWIT MORON DUMBASS in the getz shrugs his shoulder and drives on.

The guy on the bike cut his face open and the brake hoods shifted on his bars. I reckon he got away very lightly. He could easily have broken his neck on my bakkie.

So 3 bad decisions. All of which I had no part in resulted in me having a hefty repair bill to my car. Joy!

should Mr Pro Cyclist not be covering that cost of repair!
