Graham S Posted March 29, 2023 Share PATHETIC start to the evening ride. Bike shifted in the bike rack and my BRAND NEW maxxis tyre melted slightly from the exhaust.. No sealant came out but it did lose air. I took the tyre off and checked the inside wall. One tiny hole in the rubber itself, but the strands in the casing dont look to be affected. Can I patch this with a butyl strip or something similar or do the sewing method? A Carbon rim would have been a disaster, thank goodness you run Alloy. Swapping to the rear with a gator is your best bet, but honestly reliability will be on your mind the whole time you’re riding, better to replace. Get a proper (platform) bike rack as soon as possible, since you already have the towbar. Those hang on things are a good way to wreck bikes. 3. Like Morne said, stick a mushroom plug in it and ride it on the back. IF it fails at least it's a walk home and not a crash. Ya with my old 26er the rack was perfectly fine but with this new bike and the frame design its not sitting that nicely, especially since the down tube is so thick, it doesnt fit in the rubber older. If I hang it from the top tube it clamps nicely but then the front wheel sits very close to the ground, maybe like 10-15cm from the road... I've put a tube in the tyre now and will plug and patch it and see how it goes. I assume running it tubeless again is out of the question? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Jbr Posted March 29, 2023 Share I did the same mistake a while back, same tyre too, except it burnt so bad the tyre was open, straight to the bin and ride cancelled. Since then I really pay attention at which way I put the bike on the rack (even upgraded racks later on but for other reasons).
