We live in HB so we're fortunate enough to have chappies within easy walking distance. My wife and I once went for a saunter up there on a Sunday afternoon. The amount of people that were CLEARLY in no condition to drive but were perched behind the wheel of a car boozing and smoking copious amounts of weed was terrifying.

wow, yet they happily set traps on the Suikerbossie descent, perhaps nab people after the tolls!

Exactly - I find it startling that despite the size of the problem - the evidence is clearly there that not enough is actually done to address it. one would expect the roads to be teaming with traffic officials.

apart from this, perceived lack of consequences......

not perceived, law enforcement is mostly lacking, and when the guys are caught most times they get away with it with a little cooldrink money.

Safety wise, well we know south africans, they are never to drunk to drive, plus accidents only happen to other people.

Unfortunately I knew a lot of people who were happy to pay R100 at a friday night roadblock after an evening in the bar after work, but complained bitterly when their houses were broken into or their cars were hi-jacked.

Don't they realise that the robbers and hi-jackers are also paying the R100 for the cops to look the other way? Duh.

I saw a similar group of kids last Friday evening around the Table Bay Mall vicinity looking like they were up to no good. I suspect they hail from Happy Valley.

Another attempted bike jacking 45mins ago just before Woodstock bridge as you heading out of the CBD.

Perpetrator walking casually across the freeway in our direction then suddenly went for the last man and kicked his rear wheel but luckily he kept it up but the rest of the group was very aware and immediately turned around to chase after him but he fled back across the freeway to the other side to meet up with the rest of his crew. 3-4 of them in total.

We were a group of 9 grown men and they still tried their luck so looks like we need to avoid this section again😡

We warned a group of 3 heading in that direction but its only because I knew the 1 guy and had his number. They were literally heading straight into an ambush only being 2 men and 1 lady.

At the start of December, I was out on a solo ride with the intention of riding into the southern suburbs via the M5 Paarden Eiland interchange. However, just before the Shell garage on the R27 service road, 3 cyclists whizzed past me.

Now, I've been seeing a ton of cyclists on my strava and in-person taking the N1 again, so my hearts been longing for the ol' seaboard ride but my gut always said just leave it.

Well...this time I sat on with the 3 other guys thinking I'd have a safer passage into the CBD but I kid you not, as soon as we emptied onto the N1 by the Womag, 3 guys approached us aggressively with one scurrying to get something out of this hoodie. Thankfully, the cyclist at the front made him muk with a headbutt gesture and the perp fumbled.

After not going that route for well over a year, I couldn't believe the odds and brazenness.

We all take the risk thinking "it will never happen to me/you" until it does. Just because you got through unscathed the last time doesnt mean we will be as lucky the next time, no matter the group size, that's unfortunately the gamble we take every day on any road for that matter.

Im finding it quite stressful lately because I am taking the risk knowing that it really could happen to me.

I don't ride the N1 route or cycle path but as you say any road is risky.  Cars and criminals and the double whammy that's killed some of us.... criminals in cars.
