Braai etiket...

It's Monday. I am outside doing what South Africans do best: I braai.

Now I'm sure we all have our braai rules.

I have a simple one: If I invite you for a braai, we are going to braai. Not one of those drinking brandy and gooing more hout on the fire BS till 23:00. We braai and have a few doppies inbetween but at some point before 19:00, we will eat.

I hate those braais where the meat never make it to the braai.

Haven't you found that after the braai ends the kuier ends?

We normally aim for a 9-10pm braai especially with close friends and family.

Braai meat includes wors, rump steak and sosaties.  Lamb chops may substitute sosaties.  In addition chicken or kaaswors may be served up as starters to keep the kids from going hungry.

If you are doing a fish braai, then it is snoek.  Anglefish may be used if snoek cannot be found, and only if snoek cannot be found.

Fires should be lit BEFORE sunset.  Food must be served before 20:00.  This is Souf Effrika not Europe.  We eat early.

Our family was invited to a particular braai when I was 5 & my boet 3 yrs old. When it was dark already the oom my dad & I got in to the oom's bakkie to fetch the meat in his deepfreez in is mother's house. They also farmed at Patensie. Those were the days before microwave ovens. I dont think the oom told the tannie he invited people over for a braai. I also think that the oom was in diep k@k that night.

Ha, Ha, I got all nostalgic, right now a pukka SA braai would be great, and I dont care about the time either.  :D

Here as everyone knows, they BBQ, mostly if you go to someone for a BBQ they do hamburgers and chicken over a gas burner - they have no idea!

But me, I still do a proper braai with wood and patience, I just lack good old SA Boerewor's, I could quite easily kill for a few good Boerie roll's right now!
